Trusting God in ongoing hard seasons can be hard! There are seasons in life that feel messy but temporary. A stressful month. A difficult transition. A season where everyone in the house seems exhausted and emotions run close to the surface. We brace ourselves for those stretches because we assume relief is coming soon.
But some seasons do not pass as quickly as we hoped.
Sometimes what began as a disruption slowly becomes part of everyday life. The diagnosis remains. The caregiving responsibilities continue. The financial strain lingers longer than expected. The unanswered prayer stretches from weeks into months, or even years.
And somewhere along the way, you realize you are no longer simply trying to “get through” something. You are learning how to live faithfully in the middle of it.
That realization can feel surprisingly heavy.
I’ve walked through seasons where I kept waiting for life to go back to normal or calm down. Every week felt full. Homeschooling, ministry responsibilities, family needs, emotional exhaustion, appointments, schedules, and the ordinary weight of daily life all seemed to pile together at once. I kept telling myself, “Once this settles down, I’ll finally breathe again.”
But eventually I realized this was not a short interruption. This was a season God wanted to walk me through, not around. That changed the way I prayed.
Instead of constantly asking, “Lord, when will this end?” I slowly began asking, “Lord, how do I stay close to You here?”
There is a difference between surviving a season and abiding with God in it. And often, the ongoing seasons of life are where our roots grow deepest.

When Life Looks Different Than You Expected
One of the hardest parts of long seasons is grieving what you thought life would look like by now.
Maybe you expected healing to come or come sooner. Maybe you thought the relationship would improve, the anxiety would ease, or the situation would finally resolve itself. Sometimes we quietly build timelines in our minds without even realizing it.
Then life unfolds differently.
That can create a strange kind of grief because you are not only carrying the situation itself. You are also carrying disappointment, exhaustion, and uncertainty about the future.
I think many faithful people silently wrestle with this tension. They love God deeply, but they also feel weary from carrying something that never seems to fully let up.
The encouraging thing is that Scripture never hides the reality of long seasons. When Paul wrote about the thorn in his flesh, he spoke honestly about pleading with God to remove it. Yet God answered him in a different way than he expected:
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)
I used to read that verse mainly through the lens of endurance. Now I hear tenderness in it too. God was not rejecting Paul’s pain. He was reminding him that grace would meet him in the middle of it.
That matters for those of us living through ongoing seasons. Sometimes faith looks less like conquering and more like remaining. Remaining connected to God. Remaining willing to trust Him. Remaining rooted even when life feels uncertain. I can’t tell you how many times that grace has met me in the middle.
God Is Still Present Here
Sometimes we unknowingly begin believing that peace will arrive once the season changes. We assume joy will come later, rest will come later, closeness with God will come later.
But Scripture continually brings us back to the present.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Wherever you go.
That includes the seasons you never would have chosen.
God is not waiting impatiently for you to “handle things better.” He is already present in the middle of the ongoing places of your life.
There have been seasons where I felt emotionally tired before the day even started. The needs around me were constant, and there were moments when I wondered if I was doing any of it well. But over and over again, God met me in small, steady ways.
A verse that spoke directly into my heart. A friend checking in at just the right moment. A quiet morning before the house woke up. Worship music playing while I did housework. The right song on Joy FM or Worship One. Small reminders that His presence was not dependent on my circumstances improving first.
Those moments mattered more than I realized at the time.
Gentle Rhythms That Sustain Us
Long seasons teach us the value of gentle spiritual rhythms.
Not pressure-filled perfection. Not striving harder. Just steady connection with God in everyday life.
For me, this has often looked simple. Keeping Scripture nearby. Choosing worship over constant noise. Letting myself pause and breathe before reacting emotionally. Asking for help instead of trying to carry everything alone. Man is that hard!
Sometimes it looks like gathering around the dinner table, even when schedules are chaotic, and intentionally reconnecting as a family. Sometimes it means limiting commitments because peace matters more than productivity.
These rhythms may seem small, but they help anchor us.
Jesus said:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (NKJV)
I used to think rest only came after the hard season ended. Now I believe God offers rest within the season too. Not always through changed circumstances, but through His presence sustaining us one day at a time.
You Are Not Falling Behind
One of the quiet lies of ongoing seasons is the feeling that everyone else is moving forward while you remain stuck.
You watch others celebrate milestones while you are still carrying the same burdens you prayed about months ago. It can make you wonder if you are somehow behind in life. But God does not measure your life the way the world does. He sees faithfulness differently.
He sees the mother caring for everyone else while quietly fighting discouragement herself. He sees the caregiver showing up day after day. He sees the person battling chronic illness or pain who still chooses gratitude in small moments. He sees the weary believer who keeps praying even when answers feel delayed.
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)
God is still working, even in places that feel slow and unresolved. Sometimes He is growing endurance. Sometimes compassion. Sometimes, a deeper dependence on Him. And often, He is growing roots that will hold steady through future storms.
What Ongoing Seasons Can Teach Us
I would never call painful seasons easy or enjoyable. But I have noticed something over the years. Some of the people with the deepest compassion, strongest faith, and gentlest spirits are people who have walked through long, stretching seasons with God.
Not because suffering automatically makes people stronger, but because abiding with God through hardship changes us. It softens us. Deepens us. Reminds us how desperately we need Him.
Long seasons also teach us to notice small gifts again. A good conversation. A quiet morning. A moment of laughter. A peaceful drive home. A prayer that steadies your heart.
These things may seem ordinary, but they become reminders that God’s goodness is still present, even here.

Just Between Us
If life has not gone back to normal, you are not failing. If you feel tired from carrying the same burdens day after day, you are not weak. And if you are learning to trust God in deeper ways than you ever expected, you are not alone.
Some messy seasons stretch us far beyond what feels comfortable. But those same seasons can deepen our roots in ways quick and easy seasons never could. God is still with you here. Still sustaining you. Still growing something beautiful and steady in your life, even if you cannot fully see it yet.
And if your ongoing season also carries deep grief, loss, or pain that changed everything, there is space for that too. You do not have to rush your healing or hide your sorrow from God. He meets grieving hearts with incredible tenderness and compassion.
Prayer Prompt
Lord, You see the parts of my life that feel ongoing and unresolved. You know where I’ve grown weary and where I’ve struggled to understand what You are doing. Help me trust You right here in the middle of this season. Remind me that You are near, even when life feels uncertain. Strengthen my heart, steady my faith, and help me continue walking with You one day at a time. In Jesus name, amen.
