Gumption is defined as initiative; aggressiveness; resourcefulness; courage; spunk; guts; common sense; or shrewdness.
I admire teens that have gumption. One such teen is a young author named Madeleine Hage. Madeleine has volunteered on disaster relief trips since the age of 10. She is now a college student at Emory University, and her new book When Haiti Shakes was recently published. When Haiti Shakes was written to help children understand earthquakes and teach them what to do if an earthquake occurs. The book will be donated by Headwaters Relief to several Haitian orphanages and schools in efforts to help know what to do during an earthquake. The book is bound in material that can withstand the heat and humidity of the Haitian climate.
We received a copy of When Haiti Shakes for review, and I have to say I was impressed.
It gives concise and clear instructions on what to do in the event of an earthquake. It is bilingual, and it is beautifully illustrated.
When Haiti Shakes is available for purchase in the Headwaters Relief Store. It is certainly worth the $15 it is listed for. Headwaters Relief Organization is a disaster relief collaboration of volunteers that supports the emotional and housing needs of families and communities ravaged by disaster.
