I’m sure you’ve seen essential oils around the internet recently, if not heard them discussed by family and friends. Perhaps you’ve been like members of my own family and asked what’s so essential about essential oils?
Essential oils are the highly potent, volatile components of plant matter that can be extracted using a variety of different chemical and mechanical methods. Not only are these constituents highly aromatic, but they are composed of many different elements that have scientifically proven therapeutic benefits (though the FDA limits the claims that can be made about the amazing benefits of oils).
From a chemical perspective, oils may include a variety of different molecules including (but not limited to):
- Terpenes
- Alcohols
- Phenols
- Ketones
- Aldehydes
- Esters
- Ethers
- Oxides
Over the past several decades, scientists have determined these integral chemical compounds support the immune, circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, digestive, nervous, and other body systems. Many essential oils are immune enhancing, mood elevating, and may boost stamina and energy. For instance, Bergamot oil is uplifting and refreshing and may help relieve stress and tension while Elemi Oil may be used as an antiseptic (topical use only) and may help reduce the appearance of aging. Similarly, the blend of oils in Thieves Tea (Thieves Oil, Lemon Oil
, Frankincense Oil
, and Peppermint Oil
) may aide in a healthy immune system during cold and flu season.
In order to protect and sustain the natural molecules of the plant without provoking chemically altering reactions, essential oil manufactures will typically use steam distillation and mechanical expression to obtain the oils from within the plant matter. Less desirable methods for solvent extraction exist, however these require the addition of various chemical solutions that may leave behind trace amounts of residue or filler compounds, and could potentially interact with the therapeutic components. This is exactly why it is so important to research the type of essential oil you purchase and invest in only high quality, pure essential oils. I am a fan of Young Living Essential Oils because of their Seed to Seal guarantee. To guarantee consistent quality, YL oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities, to ensure that they meet stringent specifications, exceed international standards, and contain the optimal levels of natural bioactive compounds. I also use NOW essential oils.
For thousands of years, people have used essential oils to treat a myriad of ailments and complaints, but especially with recent trends in natural lifestyles, the use of essential oils has gained significant modern popularity. Unlike many over the counter and prescription medications, pure essential oils do not contain harsh additives or synthetic components. They are 100% natural.
In addition to using products that are void of unnecessary chemicals, perhaps the most amazing thing about essential oils is the fact that they allow people to make more self-informed decisions concerning their health and wellness.

I use essential oils everyday, especially on my face and add it to my lotions. My favorite is peppermint though to add it to my tea.
