Did you know that Valentine’s Day is one of America’s most popular holidays? Valentine’s Day is surpassed only by Christmas in the number of cards sent for a holiday! I’ve been married to the best guy for over 14 years. Every year, I spend time thinking about Valentine gifts for him. This year is no different.
Did you know that the roots of this holiday go all the way back to a Roman fertility festival, held in mid-February, called Lupercalia? Mid-February was later chosen by the Christian church to celebrate St. Valentine, in effort to Christianize the celebration. Later, in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as the day to celebrate St. Valentine. The history of Valentine’s Day is rich, from banned marriages to mass printed holiday cards in the 1840s. Whatever the history, I love that Valentine’s Day is a day that I can honor the one I love. I don’t know what I did to deserve him, but I am sure glad I do.
