Being Tough Is Being Capable of Great Endurance

When asked who I draw inspiration for toughness from, I immediately think of my Mom.  My Mom taught me some of my most valued life lessons, such as… “Set your own limits, do not allow others to set them for you,” and “People will remember what you say because they will remember how you look, make the impression worthwhile.”  My Mom taught me to be tough, because she is tough.  If being tough is being capable of great endurance, my Mom is one of the toughest women on the face of the planet.

Being tough is being capable of great endurance @thatbaldchick

My Mom has endured a lot.  She was raised the eldest of five living children, and had another four siblings that died in infancy or as toddlers.   At one point in her childhood, her family lost everything in a flood.  On more than one occasion, she took the beating that was meant for one of her brothers.  At one point, she actually burned Grandpa’s razor strap and buried the buckle, so he couldn’t use it to whip them with again.  She helped raise her siblings.  Her brother Jerry died as a result of burns sustained in a car accident.  Her brother Charles committed suicide.  Her Mom died at the age of 42, when my Mom was in her early twenties.  Her Dad died at the age of 56, when Mom was just forty.

She went from helping to raise her siblings to raising her own children and being married to an alcoholic (yes, my Dad is a recovered alcoholic now, but he wasn’t recovered then).  I remember Mom breaking her knee when I was a kid.  Her kneecap was shattered into multiple pieces, and the surgeon literally wired the pieces back together, giving her a humpty dumpty knee.  Anyway, the surgeon told Mom that she’d limp for the rest of her life.  Mom said she had six kids and didn’t have time for that.  So, after the swelling went down, she’d slide her cast off her leg and exercise her knee in the bathtub.  She didn’t limp, that’s for sure.

She had her first heart attack at age 45, a stroke at 48, and another heart attack at 63.

And yet, she does this often…

My Mom Smiling

and she does this, too…

My Mom Laughing

I could go on and on.  My Mom has endured much.  And yet, she somehow manages to find the joy in living.  More than once I’ve heard Mom say, “Life is messy, but it’s worth living!”

When I think of the things I’ve faced, in comparison to the things she’s faced, and I see the smile that she greets life with, I am humbled and inspired.  My Mom inspires me to be tough because she is tough. The taught me to be tough by example, not just with her words.

  13. Our moms would get along great they have a lot in common! My mom has battled cancer twice, buried her mother, grandmother and husband within three months of one another in the same year, had an accident at work that kept her in the hospital for one full year where she was also told no matter how much physical rehabilitation they gave her she would never walk again, and like your mom she said the same thing, I have no time for that! My mom is a tough bird too, and she is big on smiling and laughing as well! 🙂

  16. Your mom sounds like an amazing woman. I have always been told that many of us have to endure some terrible times in life. How we handle them is totally up to us and it will shape us into the person we are today. My mom is strong and she’s never one to complain. She’s lost everything. Gained nothing. And even though she struggles through life, she’s determined to not give up without a fight.
