Tips to Make Getting Older a Little Easier

I worked in geriatrics, i.e. with older clients, for a large portion of my career as a nurse. Through my work, I learned that life is short, and you never know what is around the corner. Growing older is a privilege. Living independently while doing so can become a challenge, both physically and mentally. As the body ages, it starts to get a little slower, and sometimes the brain doesn’t work as quickly as it once did. For that reason, it’s essential to anticipate changes in your needs as you age, and have things in place to help you remain independent as long as possible. Here are some tips to make getting older a little easier.

Tips to Make Getting Older a Little Easier

Stay active

Exercise and activity are good for our bodies regardless of age but, as we get older, it becomes even more important. We may be more prone to illness, disease, aches, and pains, but keeping in good shape and working our muscles and joints can help to keep us healthy.

Yoga and swimming are particularly popular with seniors, but if you prefer the idea of something a little easier, a brisk 20 – 30 minute walk each day can do wonders for your physical and mental health. If you like the idea of monitoring your step count, you could always buy a fitness watch or step tracker to help keep you motivated.

Avoid Loneliness

Once you retire, it’s easy to lose touch with people you once had lots in common with, especially if they are still working. It’s important to make an effort to keep the lines of communication going with friends and acquaintances. Loneliness can have a detrimental impact on your mental health and overall mood. It’s always worth making an effort to stay in contact with people and, if possible, form new relationships with like-minded people.

If you are struggling to meet new people or feel lonely or isolated, find out if there are any clubs or groups in your area. It’s the ideal way to learn new things and make friendships along the way.

Make changes around the home

As you get older, your body starts to slow down, and day-to-day tasks can become harder to accomplish. The main reason so many people move to a single-story property when they get older is that they are far easier to maintain and make it a lot easier to maneuver around.

If you are beginning to feel that your home is becoming harder to maintain or you are struggling to get around, there are various adaptions you can make that may make life a lot simpler. Walk-in tubs, for example, are the perfect solution for anyone with mobility issues who enjoy relaxing in a warm bath. Stairlifts provide easy access to other floors, or if you live alone and are concerned about trips or falls, a medical alert system might be what you need.

Consider where you feel you may benefit from help, and then do some research to find out what products and services are available.

Volunteer

Volunteering is not only rewarding, but it can be lots of fun too. If you haven’t done it before, it might be something to consider. From helping out in a food bank to serving tea in a hospital. If you want to offer a bit of your time to help others, but aren’t sure where to start, check out Volunteer Match to explore opportunities in your area.

You can meet lots of interesting people along the way and gain much satisfaction knowing that you are helping to make a difference in someone else’s life.

Eat a healthy diet

Getting older doesn’t mean you can take your foot off the gas where healthy eating is concerned. Processed foods not only zap your energy but can, over prolonged periods, contribute to many illnesses and diseases, so, whenever possible, stick to healthy, fresh foods that contain an abundance of goodness.

Vegetables, seeds, legumes, grains, nuts, and fruit are full of nutrients that will help your body and mind function to their optimum levels, so try not to scrimp on the good stuff. The healthier you are, the better you will feel, so try and keep treats to a minimum.

Smart home technology

If you don’t find technology too daunting, there are some great smart home gadgets available that could make your life a lot easier. Smart home assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Home allow users to carry out several functions with voice activation. You can, for example, create and update shopping lists, switch your lights on and off or even control your TV with your voice.

Another great piece of kit is a smart doorbell. They allow you to see and speak to anyone who visits your property without getting off the sofa. It’s a great security measure and will give you additional peace of mind in terms of your safety too.

Use a meal prep service

If cooking is becoming a chore or you find that you are wasting a lot of food, meal preparation services could be the answer to your prayers. Many companies will send ready prepared food straight to your door each week, so all you have to do is heat them. Others will provide recipe cards and all the ingredients you need to create fresh and healthy meals every day.

Another option is to batch cook once a week and freeze individual portions, so you have a range of good wholesome meals to choose from when you need them.

Ask for help

One of the most important things to remember as you get older is that it’s okay to ask for help. If you are struggling with anything or feel that things are getting too much, reach out to family, friends, or neighbors and tell them what you need. You have probably spent most of your life helping other people, so turning the tables from time to time isn’t a big deal.

Asking for help isn’t a bad thing. We’re supposed to share one another’s burdens. Perhaps it’s time you allow someone to share yours. I hope you never have to consider choosing a nursing home. If you do, be sure to get help with that, too.
