Tips to Keep Carpet, Area Rugs, and Upholstery Clean

Special thanks to Woolite INSTAclean for making this post possible.  All opinions are my own.

Do you have a mess maker in your life? I have three little mess makers that I love dearly, and sometimes it seems that keeping my house clean is one of the biggest struggles I face on a daily basis.  My kids love to make messes everywhere they go… your carpet, my upholstery, area rugs.  They are equal opportunity mess makers. Which makes your carpet, my upholstery, and area rugs arch nemeses.  It’s not as if we can just buy new things they ruin them. Over the last few years, I have learned a few tricks to keeping things tidy, despite their best efforts. It really IS possible with these tips!

Talk to the kids about caring for things properly!

My kids are getting older and we have made a point to talk to them about caring for things properly. We talk about being careful with food and drinks and putting newspaper under crafting projects.  We’ve also taught them the importance of cleaning spills and messes immediately to avoid stains setting into anything.  Our upholstery is currently one of our biggest areas of concern, we have talked about how we can take better care of it because little care goes a long way. Occasionally, they miss the mark.  Like the day I came into the living room to find an unidentified stain on the couch and their three bobble-heads that insisted they didn’t know what it was, how it got there, or who was responsible.  Fortuntately, I didn’t have to solve the mystery to get the couch clean! I sprayed Woolite INSTAclean on it and waiting a few minutes.  Stain. Gone.

Use an area rug!

Whether you’re trying to protect your carpet for as long as possible, or have hardwood floors and trying to keep your toes from getting cold, an area rug is a great idea.  Especially in high traffic areas or around the beds! Kids love to have fun and sometimes there is no stopping the messes that follow fun!

Cleaning carpets, area rugs, and upholstery at least once a month!

I have also come to respect that routine care of our things is just a way of life. If you have carpet, cleaning it once a month helps to keep high traffic areas looking their best.  If you have area rugs, cleaning monthly helps them come to life again.  And well, who doesn’t have upholstery of some sort?  The couch that had the unidentified stain is old (as in, my husband had it in college long before we met old).  It is a mess magnet.  Routine cleaning helps keep it looking fresh *as much as possible with 15 year old couch*.
