Do you hesitate when you have to buy furniture online? Buying furniture online can feel quite risky, and you need to make sure that you don’t regret your purchase. While scrolling through a furniture store website, you might have found exactly what you have been looking for. If you are scared to buy furniture online, you may think twice before “adding to cart.” We’ve been brave enough to purchase furniture online. I thought I’d share some tips you can use to buy furniture online, perhaps you’ll avoid the mistakes I made. LOL
Tips To Buy Furniture Online
There are a few things you can do to ensure that buying furniture online is a win-win for you. If you’re ready to give your home a fresh new look, but are short on time, shopping for furniture online may be just what you need. We wanted to make our homeschool room functional quickly, so we took to browsing the web.
Function Over Aesthetic
You may have found the cutest couch out there, but before buying it, you must determine if it is functional. It is very easy to lose yourself in the aesthetics of furniture online but do not make your decisions in haste and consider the functionality of your chosen items. We learned this the hard way when we purchased a futon because I liked the way it looked. When it arrived, I realized it’s filled with air. Yes, air. The sides of the cushion are hard plastic, but the cushions have nothing in them. I really wish I’d done a sit test on this futon before buying it online. I’d originally purchased the futon for our homeschool room, as a soft space for learning. It’s been relegated to the corner of the play area in the basement and the keyboard and stand have taken it’s place.
It is important for furniture to look good, but it’s important for it to be functional too. This is why you must read the product description clearly and try to understand whether it is a useful option for you.
When you order furniture online, you may not be able to eyeball the dimensions. It’s hard to imagine what 32 inch round, or 72 inches long, may actually be in your space. This can be one of the biggest drawbacks of getting furniture online, but it doesn’t have to be. Since you’re shopping online, you may not be able to tell if the furniture will fit in your space and if it will look good.
To understand the dimensions better, measure your room first. After you’ve measured the room, put the dimensions of the furniture piece against it to get a better idea of whether the furniture will go well within the space you have. I recommend cutting poster board (or cardboard) to the dimensions of the piece you’re looking at online, and actually put it in your space.
Use Different Shapes
When you buy furniture online, it can be tempting to use the same shapes for all your furniture. When it’s all put together, though, you may find that the room lacks the depth or character you’d hoped for. I did that when we first moved into our new house. The shelves were all squared, the desks were squared. It looked very modular. So, I bought some curvy chairs and ordered a cute 40″ round dining table with tulip pedestal in white,. It made the space more inviting. I learned that it is best to be a little creative and go for a mix of different shapes and sizes to create an aesthetically pleasing collection of furniture that does not look like a hot mess. Adding the pops of color with their desk chairs helped, too.
Decide Your Budget
I recommend setting your budget before you look for furniture online. You need to stay within your budget. It is easy to get carried away when shopping for furniture online. Having a set budget, and sticking to it, will help keep you from spending more than planned to ore more than you can afford. Of course, your budget needs to be realistic. You’re unlikely to outfit your dining room with a new table and chairs for under $100. Of course, if you don’t mind shopping secondhand, you can shop Marketplace or local resale groups, too.
Cross Check Delivery Details
As you’re shopping online, be sure that you’ve set the correct delivery details. It can impact both the sales tax and the shipping fees.
Self Assembly or Expert Assembly
Some online retailers offer expert assembly free of charge, while some charge a service fee for expert assembly. Be sure to check the policies to help you decide between assembling your new furniture yourself or having someone else do it for you.
If you keep all these factors in mind when you buy furniture online, you will not regret the purchases you make!
