As y’all know, we recently moved. My kids and I have been working in our yard to create an environment that is a haven for local birds, butterflies, pollinators, and other wildlife. It’s been a wonderful way to teach and learn about nature, and I’ve been adding books for the study of nature to our homeschool shelves to inspire a love of nature and conservation in my kids. I was excited, then to learn of all of the Sonlight books for your homeschool nature corner!
Sonlight Books for Your Homeschool Nature Center Corner
Sonlight is celebrating 30 years of connecting families and helping kids love to learn.
In case you’re not familiar with it, Sonlight is a Christian curriculum company that offers a wide array of literature-based curriculum. They offer books for just about every subject possible in preschool through 12th grade. We fell in love with Sonlight curriculum years ago, and continue to use many of their books. That’s why I was excited to partner with Sonlight to highlight Sonlight books for your homeschool nature center corner.
The Berenstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature
The Berenstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature is a beautifully illustrated anthology that includes The Berenstain Bears’ Almanac (seasons, weather, and astronomy), Nature Guide (plants, animals, and earth science), and Science Fair (machines, matter, and energy). It is humorous, factual, easy to read, easy to understand, and full color. This book is a great choice if you wish to add more Sonlight Nature Books to your homeschool library.

Mysteries and Marvels of Nature
We first used the Mysteries and Marvels of Nature book when my 11yo was in 2nd grade. This book is part of Usborne’s “internet-linked” series, in which the company offers carefully-selected and controlled links to web pages of interest. It is full color and full of fascinating glimpses of the amazing, unexplained and mysterious in the animal, plant, fish, reptile and insect realms. This is one of the books that all of my kids have pulled off the shelf to look at “just for fun.”

National Parks: A Kid’s Guide to America’s Parks, Monuments and Landmarks
The National Parks: A Kid’s Guide to America’s Parks, Monuments and Landmarks book has been on my list to get for a while. This book details over 75 U.S. parks, monuments, and landmarks, from California’s Sequoia National Park to Maine’s Acadia National Park. It is organized alphabetically by state, so you can flip to your state and learn all about the treasures nearby, or you can flip to a state you want to visit and start planning your vacation. This book is so nice!

Introduction to Biology
The Introduction to Biology book is currently part of Sonlight’s Warehouse Sale. I hope that just means they’re bringing out an updated version soon, because this book is a must have for teaching biology from a creation view. It provides an intro to most of the plants and animals of the world, explains how they are classified and how they live, and discusses (from a biblical perspective) some of the problems with modern classification (taxonomy).
Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution
The Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution DVD showcases animal designs that can only be attributed to a Creator. It inspires a closer look at the world around you. This DVD features former traditional evolutionist, Jobe Martin, who came across animals that challenged his assumptions and led to a revolution in his thinking. Even if you plan to teach science from an evolution view, this DVD is important to include for alternative views. It’s a must have.

Listening to Crickets
We first read Listening to Crickets a few years ago, and I plan to read it again this coming year. It is the true story of Rachel Carson, a female award-winning author and marine biologist during the 1950s. Her love for nature and animals prompted the ecology movement. Rachel Carson may well have been the finest nature writer of the 20th Century. She was a remarkable woman, scientist, and conservationist. This book is a great addition to your Homeschool Nature Center Corner!
Sonlight is also giving away this Connect with Nature Bundle! The contest runs now through 9/30/20 with a new giveaway item each Wednesday and the GRAND PRIZE of an All-Subject Package of your choice from Sonlight. Be sure to enter weekly!
