Up next in my “just for fun” reads for 2014 is the novel Sidetracked by Brandilyn Collins. Sidetracked is one of the Jerry B. Jenkins Select Line of books. Having never heard of Brandilyn Collins, I wasn’t sure what to expect from her novel. It tells the story of 34 year old Delanie Miller. Delanie had fled her dark past and settled in a small town in Kentucky for a quiet life. She’d surrounded herself with people she thought of as family, and even lived with them, and had a loving boyfriend. She was eagerly waiting for him to ask her to marry him.
Delanie has lived her lie for so long, though, that is has become a part of her. When her friend, Clara, is murdered and Delanie finds the body, the idyllic peace enjoyed by the town is shattered. Delanie must choose between protecting the truth of her past, or risk it all to speak up for Billy King, a simple-minded young man that the police chief wants to peg for murder.
But protecting this life of promise means keeping a low profile and guarding the truth of her past—from everyone. Delanie has to find a way to uncover Clara’s murderer yet protect the life she’s created for herself.
Sidetracked is an intense novel, intricately weaving mystery, murder, and spiritual principles. The plot grabs your attention, with an interesting combination of heartache and intrigue, and doesn’t let go until the surprise ending. I read the book from cover to cover in about five hours.
Warning- make sure you have nothing planned when you pick up this book… you will get sidetracked! I had planned to go to bed after reading one chapter… I ended up finishing it before I went to sleep.
I’d definitely recommend Sidetracked to anyone who enjoys mystery or suspense novels in the Christian genre.
