I think it’s probably well-established that my youngest daughter is addicted to Elmo. I’ve blogged about it before, and I’m sure I’ll blog about it again. We cannot go into any store that has a toy section, and walk past the toys, without her freaking out because she knows there is an Elmo nearby. I’ve felt lucky to have avoided the talking Elmo toys through my two older girls, but I have a feeling my streak is about to end and that someone (likely me) will cave and buy an annoying talking Elmo for her second birthday. Must…stay…strong.
Anyway…
I’ve had the chance to review several other Sesame Street DVD’s and Miss A has loved each and every one. The new Learning Rocks DVD by Sesame Street (which just became available for purchase) is no different. While the other DVD’s we have watched have solely focused on letters, sounds and numbers, the Learning Rocks video takes a slightly different approach and focuses on: expanding children’s vocabulary, teaching basic math skills, and helping children see the value in investigation.
Results of over 1,000 studies actually suggest that children who watch Sesame Street on a regular basis show emerging literacy skills at a higher rate, and earlier, than children who do not watch Sesame Street. I must say, I believe this to be the case as well. All of my children have watched this program, and all of them have learned language quickly and used words in their appropriate context from an early age. As annoying as Elmo can be to Moms everywhere, I kind of love Miss A’s addiction to him because it’s developing a love of learning in her!
My kids would love this! We recently got netflix and they have enjoyed watching sesame street!
My girls love Sesame Street too! The Learning Rocks dvd sounds like a good one since it goes into math and the value of investigation. You can never start learning too early! Thanks for sharing the review; I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one.
I can’t begin to express the how much a fan of Sesame Street fan we are around here. This looks like a must have.
I am a fan of Sesame Street.
