When I was a child, my hands and feet would crack and bleed all the time. I am affected by Hay Wells Syndrome, one of the ectodermal dysplasias, which makes me prone to eczema lesions (a condition of dry skin characterized by inflammation and itching). My hands and feet would hurt and itch like crazy during the day, then at bedtime my Mom would gently slather my hands and feet with Eucerin Creme, wrap them in plastic wrap and put socks on them. Then she’d slather more Eucerin on top of my head before kissing me on the forehead, calling me her “little grease monkey”, and send me off to bed.
I never understood, until Mister was born, just how much love went into that nightly ritual. Mister’s skin was so very fragile for such a long time. In the hospital, after birth, we weren’t even able to put clothes on him because the seams would cause his skin to come off. We were instructed to “handle him only when necessary.” For the longest time, more often than not, his only covering was a diaper. And even that was left off from time to time, just to allow his skin to breathe.
Every new milestone for him– rolling over, crawling, standing up, walking — meant new skin abrasions, which were slow to heal because of the Hay Wells Syndrome. Changes in weather meant new eczema spots and his hands and feet would blister, crack, and bleed. The skin on his scalp just peeled with the slightest bump. I would slather him up, with the Eucerin Original Healing Soothing Repair Crème, just the way my Mom did me. As I did, I would tell myself, “If my Mom can do make it through this with two of us, I can certainly do it with him.”
We have to be careful with what products we use on Mister’s skin. Eucerin remains a trusted product in our family, all these years later.
Mister’s skin has toughened a lot with age. He still gets abrasions, and is slow to heal. Just last week he bumped his head while we were at a friends house. He climbed up on my lap crying, and as I brushed his scalp to feel for damage, a chunk of his hair came off in my hand, leaving an angry sore behind. I swallowed my tears and prayed for his boo boo, like I always do, and he went off to play again.
He does have this spot on the right back side of his head, though, that constantly itches and he constantly rubs or scratches. To the point that he has literally rubbed the hair off. He’s old enough to not like the sticky pillow that goes along with treating the scalp with the traditional Eucerin Crème, so we’re switching to Eucerin’s newest line of products specifically designed to relieve Eczema symptoms, Eucerin Eczema Relief Instant Therapy and Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Crème. Both are clinically proven to be gentle enough for everyday use on eczematic skin, soothe and calm itchiness, reduce redness, and improve moisture. The Eucerin Eczema Relief Instant Therapy is free of dyes, fragrance, and steroids!
Short of a miracle, his hair will never regrow in that spot, which is okay. I just want him to be comfortable and not be itching it all the time.
