Mister is taking an American History class through our Homeschool co-op this year. I’ve been trying to decide what to do for next year for social studies that I can use for both Mister and Sister. I recently received Our Constitution Rocks and Our Presidents Rock from Zondervan for review, and I believe my search may well be over! Both books are written by Juliette Turner, who is an honor student, singer, dancer and the National Youth Director for Constituting America. She wrote Our Constitution Rocks when she was just 14 years old, and has followed it up more recently with Our Presidents Rock. The fact that both books are written by a young person means two things… they are fun AND they are relevant.
Our Constitution Rocks takes a look at our nations founding document and makes it relevant to kids today. It is illustrated in a cartoon style and each of the articles of the Constitution is covered. It gives the “bottom line” of each article, and details what our founding fathers were thinking. It also explores why kids should care about our Constitution and what it says. Because it is broken down by articles, this book is easy to understand and will be perfect for exploring the Constitution with my kids.
Our Presidents Rock is written in the same style as Our Constitution Rocks. It takes a unique look at each our our US presidents, in order of service, as well as the role of our Executive Branch. It gives details of platform speeches, fun facts about each, as well as important events that took place during their terms. It also looks at their post presidential contributions.
I’ll be the first to admit that I struggle with history. It’s never been my favorite subject. I personally enjoyed both of these books, and can’t wait to use them to teach my kids more about this great nation we are blessed to be citizens of!
