I am a firm believer that all teens – boys and girls – need to take a high school life skills class. Why? Because they are going to have to adult someday. And adulting requires skills. I was a bit surprised when my 13 year old son asked to enroll in a high school home economics class offered at our local co-op for the coming year. I was also impressed. I was so excited, then, to get my hands on the Voyage life skills course for high school. This life skills class for teens will complete his high school life skills credit.
Life Skills Class for Teens
The Voyage life skills course, from Thrive Academics, is an online, self-paced life skills class for teens. It covers key subjects including personal development, career planning, college planning, financial responsibility, and everyday life skills. The home economics class at co-op, which meets for 28 weeks, will serve as a lab for life skills. In that class, they’re going to teach things like the basics of house keeping, cleaning, cooking, organization and more life skills. The Voyage course Thrive Academics is right up our alley!

Voyage High School Life Skills Modules
The life skills for teens course has five modules. I’ll explain them in greater detail here.
Voyage – Who I Am
The Who I Am module is designed to help students explore their strengths, skills, and purpose. This module will walk them through writing their own unique purpose statement. It will help them assess their skills, strengths, and passions. It will help them develop their own personal brand, and they will even create a personal brand crest to represent who they are. Importantly, it will help them to develop a personal vision of their future and teach them how to set SMART goals, as well as how to develop an action plan to accomplish them.
Career Planning
Students will develop a career profile in the Career Planning module. They’ll research and explore various careers, which will provide career ideas and help them learn what is necessary to pursue those career ideas. They’ll learn how higher education may help them advance in various careers. They will also learn how to create a resume, how to apply for a job, and walk through a virtual job interview.
College Planning
While we won’t need the College Planning module real soon (after all, my son is 13), I am glad it’s there. This module will provide step-by-step guidance on choosing and applying to college. It also covers financial concerns related to college.
Financial Responsibilities
In the Financial Responsibilities module, students will learn how to develop responsible, if not wise, spending habits. They will learn about different types of financial accounts, how to use them, and how to apply for them. They will learn what credit is, how to use it responsibly, and why it’s so important. They’ll also learn about paying bills and taxes, how to make (and keep) a budget, and how to deal with any college related student loans they may eventually incur.
Everyday Living
The Everyday Living module will walk your kids through some of the things they need to know for life in general. They’ll learn about making decisions for personal health, travel, home and vehicle maintenance. They’ll also practice good communication skills and learn about maintaining healthy relationships.
What We Think of the Voyage Life Skills Course
Adding the Voyage Life Skills Course for high school is perfect. I knew I’d need to add to the co-op home economics course in order to have enough hours to count it as a high school life skills class. This will give us the hours we need.
My son did say that he wished there were more character options for his profile character, but overall, he’s excited about this class. He’s especially eager to create his own personal crest. He’s also excited about exploring career options.
I am excited that this course will give my son skills that he’ll use for a lifetime. Hopefully, it’ll help him avoid some of the mistakes his father and I made.
