Winter is here and the holiday break has passed. If you’re like me, gray weather affect has set in and dulled the excitement about learning in your homeschool. I had to put on my thinking cap and figure out how I can get my whole family back in the groove of homeschooling. Here are a few tips on how to get kids excited about learning during the winter.
How to Get Your Kids Excited About Learning During the Winter
The Homeschool Buyers Co-op has an award-winning selection of language arts products, which you can save up to 93% on, including curriculum for phonics, reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling and grammar.
Pick a Reading Program Your Kids Will Love
It can be hard to pick a reading program your kid will fall in love with. With my oldest, I bounced around trying to figure out what would be the best reading program for him. Now that I’m teaching my daughter how to read, I’ve fallen in love with Reading Eggs! Reading Eggs is great for teaching your kiddo how to learn to read. You can use Reading Eggs to teach your child how to become a proficient reader.
Get Your Kids Pumped Up About Writing
Nothing quite gets my kids back on track with homeschooling than writing. I have one who loves to express herself with writing, and one who would rather do fifteen pages of math than write a paragraph. This year, we switched to IEW for my reluctant writer, and it’s made a huge difference! We’re in the Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year goes with it!
Why Not a Virtual Reading Coach?
Sometimes our kids get tired of hearing us talk. This may sound a little harsh, but it’s very true. Kids sometimes need a little push from someone else, to make their reading a little better. MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach has been a great way for my kids to get individualized reading instruction. Virtual instructors take on the role of personalizing a learning plan for your child.
A Little Shakespeare Never Hurt Anyone
You see quotes that Shakespeare wrote all over the place, but what about getting your kids interesting in his literature? BBC Shakespeare Online Streaming is a great way to get this literature right in front of your kids! I love it because the teacher guides, student activities, and quizzes are all included. Plus, you get 24/7 access to the site at all times. I love the flexibility this offers to our homeschool life, especially during the winter months. Sometimes we quickly run out of things to do and this is definitely one of my go to entertainments for the kids.

Allow Your Kids to Dive into Poetry
I’ve always been a lover of poetry, but my kids really love this stuff. To get my kids amped up about homeschool in the winter months, I love to concentrate on poetry. My “go to” for poetry is the Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization series. I’ve loved learning more about memorized language and so have my kids.
