We’re switching things up a bit with our homeschool for the fall, and one of the things that I want each of my kids to learn is correct touch typing method. I’ve looked at many typing programs and wanted to find an interactive typing tutor that is homeschool friendly and that all three of my kiddos could find success with. I was happy to find Typesy!
Interactive Typing Tutor
I was compensated for my time reviewing this product. All opinions are my own.
Typsey is an interactive typing tutor that allows homeschool parents control of the classroom. Parents have the ability to control every aspect of each child’s learning, assignment, and assessment. Parents can also monitor their child(ren)s progress with the in program progress reports.
Why Teach Typing
We have used devices in our homeschool for a long time. From using tablets for learning apps to using the desktop pc for research and writing, we make frequent use of our devices. I want my kiddos to learn correct touch type techniques not only because it will improve their overall learning experiences, but also because using correct techniques goes a long way toward preventing injury later in life.
Typesy for Homeschool
Typsey has a Typsey Homeschool Edition which is perfect for families. Setting up a Typesy classroom is relatively easy. After creating my account, I added each of my kiddos as a student. I selected to have the system generate a username and password for each of them. Then, I created a classroom, and enrolled each of them in it.
From there, I can assign lessons and tests. The lessons on Typesy are short and sweet. For example, the home row is divided into 23 lessons. Each lesson has a short video.
Each lesson is also followed by exercises that correspond with that lesson. Activities include typing exercises that teach help students improve their rote touch typing skills. Correctly typed letters appear in green while incorrectly typed letters appear in red.
When the typing speed and/or accuracy falls below the parameters set, an adaptive learning prompt displays the typing speed as well as the recommended typing speed. It also displays and the typing accuracy as well as the recommendation. They prompt allows the student to complete the activity again.
When an activity and level are completed successfully, students earn success points.
Typesy Controls
As the parent, you can set the typing speed and accuracy goals for your kiddo based on their typing experience and/or ability. Typesy constantly monitors their progress and adapts according to their needs. You can also set the system to lock out future lessons until they “pass” the preceding lesson. This is a nice feature for those who have students who think they know what they do not know. 😉
Typesy Fun and Games
There are also fun games to play, that will build accuracy and speed.
The games are divided into typing fun, accuracy building games, speed boosting games, and keyboard skills. There is also the ability to self test.
One of the games resembles a certain oldschool videogame, and it is pretty awesome. 😉
Typsey Review
Overall, we really like Typsey. I, as a parent, love the parental controls that are available. I also love that the lessons are short and sweet, so as to not overwhelm students who struggle in certain areas. I’ve actually been using Typesy myself to brush up my skills, and I really think it’s a program your whole family would love.
My kids enjoy the games and appreciate the short lessons. They still aren’t keen on a formal typing program, since they’ve been using devices for a long time, but they’ve agreed to give it a go and see if it improves their abilities.
Typesy is Reasonably Priced
If you’re anything like me, you need to get the most bang for your buck! I am ALWAYS looking for curriculum that is reasonably priced. With 3 kiddos in 3 different levels, curriculum choices have to make sense and they have to have value.
There are two Typesy Homeschool levels. The Typesy Homeschool Family membership allows for 2 parent teacher admin accounts and up to 4 students. The Typesy Homeschool Big Family membership allows for up to 10 students! They even have a Typesy Homeschool Co-Op option, which is pretty cool.
Typesy Giveaway
Typesy is giving away a subscription to 10 lucky winners. Winners will be chosen to win their choice of small or large family subscription. Winners can be anywhere in the world.
Typesy also has a 12 month money back guarantee, which is huge if you’re a homeschool parent on a budget. Since the membership is for 5 years, they give you an entire year to request a refund if you’re not satisfied. I honestly can’t imagine why anyone would request a refund, but hey, the guarantee is there if you need it.
