Whether a fourteen hour drive to the mountains of Colorado, or a three hour drive to my Mom and Dad’s, vacations for us typically mean a road trip. With three kids, flying just isn’t feasible most of the time. With quite a few road trips under our belt, I have learned how to survive a road trip with kids. I thought I’d share a few of my road trip sanity savers with you.
How to Survive a Road Trip with Kids
Listen to a Book
I can’t be the only Mom that tires of the incessant “are we there yet” or “how much longer?” Break out your tablet or smart phone before you go and download a book to listen to en route. Some people can read while riding in a car. I’m not one of them. I get carsick. Audible is a great way to listen to your favorite book, or a new one, without the car sickness! I recently started listening to The Benedict Option, a book I’ve wanted to read for a while but haven’t had time. I love the that I can drive and listen! What’s awesome about Audible is that you can listen from your iPhone, Android phone (I have a Galaxy S5, and it works great on there), iPod, or other mp3 player. If your device has a sound card, chances are you can listen to Audible. Right now you can try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks!
Stop to Eat
There’s nothing that can ruin a good road trip quite like the tummy grumbles. If we’re going to be in the vehicle for more than three hours, I’m looking for places to eat on the way. IHOP is a great option for road trip meals, because I know they have things on the menu that my kids will eat.
The fact that IHOP serves breakfast all day makes my whole family happy! They can all enjoy their pancakes while I have a Big Steak Omelette. Oh, yeah!
When we’re road tripping, I have to have my snacks. I love packing snacks that are going to keep me satisfied without feeling sluggish. Chops Beef Jerky is a great snack for on the road. Not only does it taste great, it is all natural, has no preservatives, no nitrites, and no MSG. My favorite is the Sweet & Spicy because it’s sweet with a bit of kick from chili peppers. It’s incredibly moist and tender, unlike other beef jerky I’ve tried.

Be sure to have an extra bag or two, because tiny fingers may sneak in and abscond with your tasty treats!
Bring the Duct Tape
Go ahead and laugh, but I kid you not, it never fails. We’ll be on a road trip and something will happen where the phrase, “duct tape will fix it” comes to mind. Whether it’s the hinge on our cool breaking or something else, it’s typically something that requires a duct tape that can stand up to the heat (or cold) and get dirty without pealing off. When you need a strong duct tape or weather resistant duct tape, T-Rex Tape is the one to reach for.
T Rex Tape has three layers to make it strong and is designed with sun-resistant materials, which is why it can stand up to the heat.
Keep your hands busy
I like to keep my hands busy, and the Cube-tastic 3×3 puzzle cube is perfect for road trips. It’s small enough to fit in the console, and is perfect for trips because you can use the app to scan the puzzle and ALWAYS solve it!
The step by step tutorial to solve is simple enough for kids (eh hem, me) to follow, and helps to improve problem solving skills. Score!
