When we started homeschooling, when my oldest was 4, I would have never dreamed that I’d be sitting here planning high school. I’d taught him the ladder blends and he took off reading on his own. He was eager to start kindergarten, but was too young. So, I picked up curriculum and started teaching him myself. That was 7 years ago, and here I am, planning high school science for homeschool. Because he’s science and math minded, I know I need a game plan!
High School Science for Homeschool
Planning homeschool high school science doesn’t have to be intimidating, but it is important to consider state requirements (if any) for graduation —> your students goals after high school —> and whether you with to follow a college prep science track.
State Requirements for Graduation
When planning high school science for homeschool, it’s important to know what your state requires. Homeschool high school graduation requirements vary from state to state. While some states have no specific requirements, others may require 2 – 3 years of science for graduation.
Your Students Goals after High School
In many cases, students may not know what they want to do after they graduate, which may make planning a challenge. I’ve heard, from many homeschool veterans, “when in doubt, follow a college prep track.”
Do You Need a College Prep Science Track?
If your student has a specific college in mind, it is best to check that colleges admission requirements. Most colleges require two to three years of science, including labs. Science and engineering programs may require 3-4 years of science. In many cases, the recommended science courses include biology, chemistry, and physics. Most colleges want to see classes that include a lab component where students gain experience in completing hands-on experiments as part of the class.
Homeschool Science Lab Intensives
Many homeschool parents find themselves in panic mode when they think about high school science labs. There’s good news! With homeschool science lab intensives, from College Prep Science, your homeschool high school student can compete an entire years worth of labs in one weekend.
What is College Prep Science?
College Prep Science is a Christ-Centered science program for homeschool students that focuses on preparing students for college and life. College Prep Science courses provide homeschool students access to high level science that is focused on scientific inquiry, critical thinking, process reasoning, data collection, and the graphical and written representation of research.
Greg Landry, the homeschool dad and former college professor behind College Prep Science, is passionate about teaching Christ-centered science to homeschool students. He has spent over 20 years teaching science. In addition to teaching at the university level, Greg has taught thousands of homeschool students, mentored students planning to pursue degrees within science, published and presented scientific research, and has written science lab manuals.
Greg says, “we want to prepare competent, confident students for their remaining high school years, their college years, and life. The fact that our classes and labs are taught from a Christian / Creationist worldview does not mean they’re ‘watered down.’ Quite the contrary – they are very challenging.”
In addition to live online classes, College Prep Science offers two day lab intensives that are equivalent to an entire year worth of labs. These lab intensives are available for Biology/ Anatomy & Physiology and Chemistry, as follows:
Biology / Anatomy & Physiology Lab Intensive
- First day, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
- Second day, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon
