Teaching our kids stories out of the bible helps them to grow in their faith. For many parents, it would be too easy to become lax in teaching them stories from the bible, thinking that they may be learning those stories from Sunday school. As a parent who also teaches Sunday school for the preschool age and works with youth, I can tell you that the 40-60 minutes a child sits in class at church just isn’t going to cut it. It is OUR job as parents to teach our children, and the job of the church is to come alongside us and reinforce what we are teaching at home. Which is why we do sit down with our kids and teach them bible stories that I believe are important for them to know, and use the Bible that they gravitate toward.
Of course, you can modify how you teach according to age and level of understanding, but here are four Bible stories every child should know .
Four Bible Stories Every Child Should Know
(Genesis 1-2) God created the world and everything in contains (including people) for his glory.
The first bible story I believe is important is Genesis 1-2. Teaching our children that God created the world and everything in it is important. They need to know that God created them for a purpose!
(Matthew 1-2) The birth of Jesus Christ, as well as the death and resurrection of Jesus (Luke 23-24)
The entire faith of Christianity rests on the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and subsequent resurrection, it is important to teach about the entire life of Christ. Without his birth, there would be no eventual resurrection. Reading God’s word and letting them know what happened in the life of Jesus is so important.
(Genesis 6-8) Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood
This is actually a story that gets sugar coated all too often. It’s more than just a story about cute little animals on a boat. There’s a great lesson to be learned about trusting God to enable you to do great things, even when everyone around you doubts, which makes it the perfect bible story for your child to know. Did you know that waters sprang from the ground as much as they fell from the sky in the flood?
(Daniel 3: 12-30) The Fiery Furnace
The story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego is another story this is often sugar coated. I want my kids to have the kind of faith that these three men had. When faced with certain death, they responded, “the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

As parents, we believe that it’s important for us to introduce our children to the word of God. We have a responsibility to make the Bible real for them. I think teaching them Bible stories from a young age is one way we can introduce them to the gospel and tell them the truth about Jesus Christ.
Finding a Bible that they will love goes a long way toward encouraging them to learn Bible stories! Here are a few more that we love. We have copies of each of these and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
