Fall Outdoor Activities for Kids

Fall Camping

Getting the kids outdoors in fall can be a load of fun. Fall camping is a great fall activity for kids. Taking the entire family out for a fun fall camping trip is a great way to make memories with your children and get them enjoying some fresh fall air. Get tips for camping with kids and be sure to plan a scavenger hunt.

Hiking

Take your kids on a hiking trip. Looking for a beautiful place to see fall leaves and going for a walk is a great way to get your kids outdoors and exploring. Take a camera with you to document the beauty and wonder of your trip and spend some time enjoying the beauty around you.

Bike Riding

Look for local trails to go on a bike ride. Local trails are bustling as the weather turns cool and riding bikes is the perfect activity for getting kids out to enjoy the fall weather and fresh air.

Apple Orchard

Taking your child to the local apple orchard is one of the quintessential kids activities for fall. This makes a great adventure where your child can see how apples are grown and harvest them to take home. Swing by the gift shop or market stand for fresh apple cider and donuts that make the perfect ending to this sweet fall activity.

Pumpkin Patch

Apples aren’t the only fall fun you can enjoy with the kids. Take the kids to a local pumpkin patch or corn maze for a fun fall outing that kids love. Grab some extra pumpkins for carving or making homemade pumpkin pies.

Pile O’ Leaves

Nothing says a fun outdoor fall like a pile o’ leaves! Pull out the leaf blower or an old fashioned rake. Give the yard a quick clean up and let the kids dive in for a day of fun. Don’t dispose of the leaves when they are done playing in the pile! You can leave the leaves for wild life. You can also put the crushed leaves into your garden beds to break down and be tilled in come spring for feeding your garden. If you’re inclined to road trip for some gorgeous views, learn where to see the best fall leaves!

Local Stables

Look for a local horseback riding opportunity to make the most of fall outdoors. The fall is the perfect time to take your child for a horse back ride as they wind through the trails so they can enjoy the stunning bursts of colors and fresh crisp air.

Star Gazing

Go see the stars. Look for an international Dark Sky park or a dark space in the country to look up at the sky on a cool dark night. Star gazing should definitely be on your fall bucket list. Just pour some hot cocoa to warm you up on your stargazing adventure. Add to the experience with a telescope to help them explore the surface of the moon.

Bird Watching

As the birds head south in the fall it is the perfect time for bird watching. Get your child a local bird watching guide and pair of binoculars to let your child take a peek at the birds as they travel towards warmer sunnier weather.

Placing out bird feeders is a great way to bring them close and help them on their journey. We recently completed the North American Birds unit study from Gather Round Homeschool, and added a few bird feeders to our yard. Here are the one’s we have.

Bird watching is a great kids activity for fall, as birds are more likely to visit your feeders as the weather changes.

Fall Garden

Get out in the garden and prepare it for winter. Fall is the perfect time for tilling compost into the garden beds, planting bulbs including garlic, and pruning perennials for the long cold winter. Get the kids outdoors in fall to help you with these tasks and watch them discover the beautiful changes fall brings to the world around you.
