Flowers are inarguably among the most beautiful creations of nature. The colorful petals and exciting patterns are almost always appealing to kids of all ages, from 2 to 102. And here’s the best part. Exposing a kid to blooms can be a great way to help develop their motor skills, coordination, concentration, and even self-regulation. This is best done through flower crafts for kids and floral arrangement activities, which can also help the young one to develop a sense of aesthetics. For that reason, I thought I’d share an easy-to-follow flower arrangement activity for kids that will allow your child to explore creativity with blooms.
Easy-to-Follow Flower Arrangement Activity For Kids
Of course, making a flower arrangement is nothing close to rocket science. But some arrangements take a healthy dose of creativity, experience, and an eye for details. Since we’re talking about kids here, you won’t want to go for something complex. Here are some simple steps kids can follow to arrange flowers.
1. Purchase or pick the flowers to arrange
The first and most important step is picking out the flowers you’ll be using for the activity. Depending on what excites your kid the most or what is readily available, you can pick anything from sunflowers to marigolds, classic roses, daisies, or even geraniums. We grow a variety of native flowers in our yard, so from spring to fall we have a selection of our own blooms. If you don’t grow flowers yourself, you can check your local farmer’s market. Some grocery stores carry fresh cut flowers, as well. If you still can’t find any flowers you like, you can order online. Some places even deliver same or next day.
2. Gather flower arranging supplies
Next, gather the tools, equipment, and materials you will need for the flower arrangement activity.
The following items are extremely essential to the activity.
- Floral wire and twine
These will hold the stems and blooms together in the arrangement, keeping them in position. - Floral scissors
Next up in the activity kit, the scissors will come in handy for cutting the flower stems. - Fresh Cut Flower Food (also called floral dip by some)
This is used to keep flowers looking fresh longer. You can purchase fresh cut flower food, or you can make your own fresh cut flower food. - Long handled teaspon
The kids will use this to stir the water in the floral dip. - Fine Spray Water Mister
To spray water on flowers when and if needed. - Vase
The container into which the kids will be placing the arrangement. Of course, you can just use a mason jar or an old (clean) spaghetti sauce jar.
3. Choosing a simple arrangement design
The next stage of the activity is to choose an arrangement that interests your kid and gets his or her creative juices flowing. And this stage can be executed in a matter of minutes, especially if there’s a general outline assigned to them before the activity begins.
Depending on their age, you may want to set some guidelines for your kiddos before they start arranging. You could specify the type of design or number of flowers. As for number of flowers, at least 3-4 should be included, but more is preferred. Mixing colors or shapes of flowers can be challenging, so for visual learners, a few images of arranged bouquets would be helpful.
Before they start working on the flowers, a couple of pre-set guidelines should be given to prep the kids for the activity.
4. Trimming the stems
Once you have all supplies and materials in place, the next step is to show your kids how to remove stems, leaves, and blooms that aren’t desired in the final arrangement. This should be done using floral scissors. Be sure to instruct them to cut the stems at an angle.
5. Assembling the Flowers
Have them spend a few minutes assembling the flowers before putting them in the vase, to get an idea of what arrangement they like. Once the flowers have been cut and assembled, you will then want to demonstrate to the kids how to put the blooms into a vase.
When put in a vase with water, flowers can stay fresh longer by using a fresh cut flower food. This means that your kid will have something to be proud of for the next week or so.
