I recently discovered that ZonderKidz has books in the I Can Read! series of books! In case you’re not familiar with the I Can Read! series of books, they are widely recognized as the premier line of beginning readers, and the books are organized into six levels, which are color coded, which allow you to easily find books at every stage of your child’s reading ability. We’ve long been fans of the I Can Read! books, because I can tell my kids which number to look for at the library and they can pick their own books! They can grab a book that looks interesting, and I know it’s within their abilities. When I learned that ZonderKidz has titles in the I Can Read! series, I just had to check them out, so I agreed to review A Father’s Love by David Miles.
A Father’s Love is a level two I Can Read! story, which means that Mister can easily read it and help Sister read it, too. This story, which is based on the bestselling NIV Adventure Bible, is the retelling of the prodigal son. Young readers follow the young man as he sets out on his own, with his inheritance. After wasting his money and making bad choices, he realizes that home and family are what matter most and he goes home to make aments. His father welcomes him home with open arms and joy.
This story, with it’s vocabulary and content, is most appropriate for children at a more advanced reading level. Though it’s neither here nor there to us, the content aligns with the Common Core Standards for informational reading.
Mister particularly enjoyed this book. We’ve talked about the story of the prodigal son before, but somehow reading it on his own it made more sense to him. He was glad that the father loved his son, no matter what. We were able to talk about how the father could be disappointed in his son’s choices but still love him, just like his own Daddy loves him when he makes mistakes or disobeys. It was interesting to see how he easily transferred that to God, and said “just like God will love us no matter what.”
I definitely recommend this story, and can’t wait to check out more of the ZonderKidz I Can Read! series!
