Our Thoughts
V.M. Hillyer was the first headmaster of Calvert School. He spent many of his school years studying only American history. He believed that studying world history would give children a better understanding of the world and history in general. Â He aimed to write a comprehensive world history that children could understand and enjoy.
This book is written with short chapters and features stories of world history from prehistoric man through the 20th century.  The text is well written in a conversational storybook format and is in chronological order, from the beginning of the world through the end of the Cold War.  The beginning of the world is written from a vague but decidedly secular view.
A Child’s History of the World gives the child a linear view of world history that allows for the details to be filled in later..  The tone is that of a grandparent telling stories of days gone by to the little ones. It is a great overview of history, and is not intended to be an in depth study. Since it was originally written in 1924, some views of the author are not politically correct and offensive.  That said, it is a simple and concise introduction to history that children enjoy and are able to understand.
