A good book can be entertaining for many people. Similar to movies and TV, reading a lot of books can take a toll on the budget if you’re not careful! It is possible, though, to support your interests, and fill your bookshelf or electronic reader, without emptying your wallet! Here are seven ways to save on your reading hobby.
- Go to the library
This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be amazed at how many times I forget to check the library for a book before I buy it. I have a ton of friends that say the same thing! If you want to save money and space in your home, get your books from your library. It’s free, you don’t have to clutter up your bookshelf, and you can get as many new books as you have time to read. If your library has a website, like mine does, you can even put a hold on a popular title and they’ll email you when it’s ready for pickup. You just have to be sure to renew it BEFORE your time is up if you need longer, because if it’s popular, someone else will put a hold on it, too!
- Swap books with other readers
Find a local swapping group that will allow you to get your hands on fresh books often. If there isn’t already something like this going on where you live, start one! A Facebook group makes it easy to find like-minded people who would love to swap books with others in order to get more reading material at a low cost.
- Hit bookstore sales
If you love to peruse a bookstore for your next read, only visit when they are having a sale. This will allow you to get books you enjoy for less than retail price. Also, check the clearance tables and bins while shopping. It’s possible you’ll find something interesting there, and be able to buy 2-3 for less than the cost of one at full price!
- Buy used paperbacks
For those that enjoy collecting and keeping the books you read, opt for paperbacks to save money on your hobby. They always cost less than hardcover books, and are often smaller – making them easier to store. Bookstores, flea markets, and libraries are great places to look for paperback books that won’t break the bank. I find quite a few at thrift stores, too! Oh, and yardsales!!
- Make the Switch to eBooks
Going digital may be the best way to save money on reading. eBooks have become so popular today, that many wouldn’t think about dropping $10+ on a single book when they can get ebook bundles, typically three or more books, for the same price. An Amazon Kindle is a great reading device for those that want to switch to ebooks. There are many different options, and you can get one that’s just like a thin electronic book, or one with lots of other features. I have an older Kindle Fire, and love it! Did you know that you can sort Kindle books by price? It’s a great way to get free titles!
- Use Kindle Unlimited
If you have a Kindle and want to get many books for one low price, check out Kindle Unlimited. There are several thousand books included, and you can “borrow” them just like you do at the library for $9.99/month. Since that is usually cheaper than one physical book, you will really cut your costs of reading down with this service!
- Opt for audiobooks
This is another alternative to physical books that will save money and space. Audiobooks are usually priced between ebooks and paperbacks, and can be enjoyed anywhere you would listen to the radio. In the car, at work, in the tub – the options are endless!
These are some great tips for saving on reading. I love reading books, but have not had as much time lately. I want to get back to reading soon.
