Bob Books Reading App

Bob Books are well loved by many parents, and was even Parent Choice approved in 2012! This app is an interactive phonics-based game that teaches kids which sounds out the letters make and how to connect letters to make words. My struggling reader especially loves when the black and white picture becomes colored and the drawings come to life!

Reading Eggs

Reading Eggs is well known for their web site which promotes literacy. Our favorite app is the Reading Eggs Eggy Words 250, which teaches the top 250 sight words a child needs to learn.  Sight words are commonly used words (such as the, and, of) that young children are encouraged to memorize as a beginning step of reading. This app teaches these words and reinforces the lessons taught on the website. It can be used in conjunction with the Reading Eggs site, or as a stand alone tool.  Our struggling reader enjoys this app, too, because it makes the chore of sight words a lot less boring.

PlayTales

PlayTales – Are you looking for an app the whole family will love? Try PlayTales. PlaytTales stories are designed in a playable format to promote a love for reading. There are animations, music, effects and more! I love that new books are added every week, and that you can filter by theme. It also has “read to me” and “read by myself” options, which is great since my kids read on different levels!
