Last year, after running the 2013 Hot Chocolate 5K, I set a running goal for 2014 to run three 5K’s and a 15K. Last weekend, I finished the 2014 Hot Chocolate 15K, and in doing so, surpassed my running goal!
As you all know, I am affected by AEC Syndrome, and I don’t sweat properly. Running isn’t always easy, but it id definitely worth it! On hot days and on longer runs, I have to run with water because I can’t count on the water stations being where I need them to be if I start to overheat. I use a CamelBak Hydration Pack.
The temperature difference between this year and last year was just amazing. Last year pt was subfreezing temps, and I was in layers and couldn’t feel my feet or butt for the first mile of the 5K. This year it was about 45F at the race start, and close to 47 by the end. I wore a light jacket with regular running pants and a moisture wicking shirt. I peeled off my jacket by the end of mile 2 and ran the other 7.2 miles in short sleeves.
I developed a “stitch” in the arch of my right foot and had to walk a half mile between the 8 mile mark and 8.5 miles. I still don’t know f it was an oxygenation issue or a bunch in my sock, or what. It resolved, though, and I ran the rest of the way to the finish line.
Wanna know something awesome? I set three personal records in that one race! Check it out!
I set a new PR and ran my fastest 5K at 42:06, which is an average pace of 13:33 minutes/mile. My best official 5K tprior to this was 45:19, so I shaved 3:13 off my 5K run.
I set a new PR and ran my fastest 10K at 1:25:51, which is an average pace of 13:49 minutes/mile. My last 10K in Novemeber, The Skippo, was a 1:32:02 run, so I shaved 9:11 off my 10K run.
I set a new PR and ran my fastest 15K at 2:11:39., which is an average pace of 14:08 minutes/mile. Since this was my first ever 15K, and it’s officially my longest distance run thus far, I would have PR’d even if I crawled. But I didn’t crawl. 😀
As you can see, I stink at pacing and need to work on that. I would like to finish the last 5K faster than the first 5K, and yet it was a full 35 seconds slower per mile. Guess I’ll be adding some negative splits into my training. Fun.
Check out my other runs from this year…
- The Color Run 5K
- I Love Forest Park 5K
- Flat as a Pancake 5K
- Huxman Run 2 Sweat 5K Virtual Run
- The Skippo Trail Race 10K
Did you see that? That’s four 5K’s and a 10K in addition to the 15K. My goal was three 5K’s and the 15K. Boom.
Speaking of goals, next on my list is a half marathon.
What are your health and/or fitness goals?
I am still working up the courage to run my first 5K. Congrats on finishing your race 🙂
Oh how awesome are you!!! Great job.
Congrats on beating your goal! Our weather is warmer than usual right now too, and I’m loving it!!
I want to do the Hot Chocolate 5k here in Atlanta. I’m getting my friends ready to do it. I want to get the finisher sweatshirt.
Three personal records for one run is awesome! I hope you continue to break records in the half marathon!
How awesome that you set three personal records! Good for you!
How fantastic! You should be so proud of yourself! I hope to do a 5k at some point!
Congratulations, that is fantastic. I have been thinking about trying a 5K for the first time.
You are such an inspiration, Virginia! I would love to run a 5K one day!! Way to go mama!
Congrats!!!! That is a fantastic accomplishment. Encourages me to consider trying for a 5k again.
Congrats on all of the PRs!! I had a goal of 3 half marathons this year, and I only ran one. (And “only” sounds terrible. I ran one and loved it!) I’d love to do more local races in 2015. I didn’t run as many this year!
You are pretty amazing! My only fitness goal is to work out 4 days per week. Sometimes I do 3 but I am working on it!
Way to go setting so many records! I am always impressed with people who run marathons
Great job! You set your goal and accomplished it greatly!
Congrats on completing your first 5K. You must feel so good now that it is done.
I want to continue on my path to losing weight. And maybe if I find the time, I can add in exercising. Congrats on finishing a 15k. So impressed!!
Oh my gosh this is so super amazing on so many levels. CONGRATS to YOU!!!!! I hope someday to do another 5k and run the whole thing and just get back to running.
That is awesome! I have always wanted to be a runner and keep trying each year, but I only end up injuring myself because of my knees. You did amazing though, and your times were great. Way to go!
You’re amazing! Congratulations on the 15K, that is just super awesome. The Hot Chocolate 5K sounds like something I could start with but one say I hope I’m able to run 15K too!
You are so inspiring! I hope to run a half marathon in 2015 too! Let’s hope we both reach our goals!
Wow – what an awesome job! Getting started running is on my list for 2015. I hope to run a few races too.
I would love to run a 5k next year. It’s on my list of resolutions. I hope I can do it!
