“Wow! Wow! Wubbzy, Wubbzy Wubbzy Wubbzy…Wubbzy Wubbzy, wow, wow…wow, wow…wow, wow, wow…!” The song is stuck in my head. My middle daughter, Ms. M is in love with all shows Nick Jr. I am in love with all things Nick Jr. because regardless of how blatant or understated, there is an element of educational value in most of their shows. Wow, Wow Wubbzy is no different. It’s one of the shows out there whose educational content is less in-your-face than others, and, honestly, after a long day of learning at school and doing homework (seriously…why do Kindergarteners need an hour of homework every day?!) understated educational elements and social learning vs. hard core math/spelling is a nice break.
A little background on this show, if you’ve never heard of it: Wubbzy is a cheerful, animated guy who lives in a geometrically unique little town called Wuzzleburg. He spends his days playing games like kickity-kickball and hanging out with his best buds, Widget, Walden, and Daisy. The show is designed for kids ages 2-5 and its focus is to enhance preschoolers’ social skills such as sharing, listening, compromising, helping, and appreciating other people, and one of its core elements is teaching kids how to solve conflict or cope with everyday life through the use of humor. It’s really a great little show and so cute that it’s easy to get sucked in!
As far as my kids go, they don’t really realize they are learning while they’re watching the show, but they are. A simple conversation with Ms. M after an episode shows me that she understands how the characters had to work together to solve a problem and how having a positive outlook is a choice she has to make. As far as unwind-after-school shows go, this one is kid-tested and mother-approved, and conveniently, we now own the “best of” Wow! Wow! Wubbzy dvd set so we can watch whenever we want!
Wow! Wow! Wubbzy: Best of Collection (SRP $19.98) is a great addition to any preschooler’s DVD library – and a perfect gift for this holiday season!
