My Birthday Wish

Today is my birthday, and I am now 35. Yes, I walked across the bridge from being a young adult to being middle aged.  Guess what… I don’t feel any differently than I did yesterday.

Last year I shared a birthday wish with friends and family, and raised over $200 for the NFED.  The NFED is celebrating it’s 30th year this year, and has been a part of my life for all 30 of those years.  I can’t tell you how much the NFED means to me.

So, if you would like to help me with my birthday wish this year, you can check it out here.

My Birthday Wish

Have a great day, I plan to!

Spork em in the eye

Okay, I have to tell you.  I had GRAND plans for getting things done yesterday.

And then.

I attempted to log into my site in order to write several posts, and it had been hacked.

Yes.

Hacked.

I am usually a mild mannered person.  In fact, most commonly, when I am frustrated, I like to say I would like to poke someone in they eye with a hot french fry.  That’s about as violent as I get.

Funnily enough, one day I posted to my Facebook wall that I wanted to poke someone in the eye with a a hot french fry, and a friend wrote back, “Nay, eat the fry.  Spork’em in the eye.”  Or something to that effect.

And, I have to admit, yesterday, I wish I had a Spork.

spork

And I wish I was within swinging distance of some spammers and hackers.

Because it took the collaborative efforts of Hubs and I, from 10 a.m. yesterday until lights out to clean out the hackers junk.

Did I mention that they hacked more than one of our accounts?

Yes.

Spork’em in the eye!

While searching for a funny spork image to include in this post, I did come across this t-shirt at Zazzle.

spork

Yup.

I also learned that they make a titanium spork as well as teflon friendly sporks.  Who knew sporks were so pivotal?  I bet the teflon friendly sporks would be great for camping!

So, yesterday was wasted, and now I am behind.

Please forgive me.

And don’t spork me in the eye.

I do not like cold weather

And it is cold where I live.  I cannot stand to be cold.  I hate it.  Cold weather makes my bones hurt.  Literally.

IMG_6187

So, when Mister gets that little pouty look on his face and asks to ride his bike outside in the cold, it is Hubs that gets to go on duty.

Recently, when Hubs and the kidlets were outdoors so that the kids could ride their bikes, it was cold enough that they need gloves and such.  I ran out to grab a couple of pictures of them, and standing there with my camera in hand, I would have dearly loved some hand warmers!  You know the kind?  The ones that are designed for skiers, but work great for anyone who works or plays out in the cold.  By the time I got inside, my fingers were beet red!  And when Mister came in, despite the fact that he had gloves on, his were purplish red, too.

hand warmersfoot warmers

My Dad used to use the the hand and foot warmers for hunting, which is how I learned about them.   When we were younger, Sis and I would get Dad hunting gear for his birthday.  We always got him doe pee (in a bottle) and hand/foot warmers.  He and my brother still use them if hunting on a particularly cold day.

Anyway, when I lived in Chicago, I was petrified that I would get stranded and freeze to death, so I kept an emergency kit in my vehicle with several sets of hand/foot warmers in it.   I have long since used them all (I would tuck them into my gloves when I was planning on being outside for any length of time), and was reminded by my beet red hands that I need to get some more.  Just like holding a cup of hot cocoa between your hands, minus the caffeine from the chocolate.  Hmmm.  The hand and foot warmers are air activated, so once you open them they start warming up.  The hand warmers stay warm for about ten hours, and the foot warmers for about five hours.  The foot warmers are best for walking or moving continuously and shouldn’t really be used if you are going to be inactive for a long period of time.

What do you do to keep your hands warm in frigid weather?

Don’t Just Bloom There

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been thinking about the old maxim, “Bloom where you are planted.

Some ascribe the saying to St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), who said this:”Truly charity has no limit; for the love of God has been poured into our hearts by His Spirit dwelling in each one of us, calling us to a life of devotion and inviting us to bloom in the garden where He has planted and directing us to radiate the beauty and spread the fragrance of His Providence.”

Others think that the saying originated from the Bible, and there are several passages which have the same timbre.  For example, in 1 Corinthians 7:17, Paul wrote…   Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.

Psalm 1, which is one of my all time favorite passages of scripture, also speaks to blooming where you are planted.

Psalm 1 (NIV)

1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.

3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

This morning, as I prayed, the Lord spoke to me and said, “Don’t just bloom there, flourish.”

Flourish?  What does it mean to flourish?

According to Merriam-Webster, to flourish is to:

… grow luxuriantly
… thrive
… achieve success
… prosper
… be in a state of activity or production
… reach a height of development or influence
… make bold and sweeping gestures
wield with dramatic gestures
brandish

As I studied this afternoon, I used my concordance to find other references to the word flourish in scripture.  I think Psalm 92: 12-15 most closely fits with what the Lord was speaking to my heart.

Psalm 92: 12-15 (NIV)

12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;

13 planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.

14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,

15 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”

That’s what I want.   I want to flourish.  I’m not sure how I will go about flourishing.  I know that in order to get a plant to flourish, you have to feed it, water it, give it the right amount of sunlight, and sometimes prune it.

What about you?

Are you blooming where you are planted?

Or are you flourishing?

What kind of pie plate do you use?

pie

I have used a stoneware pie plate forever.  My husband got it from his Mom, and I have used it since we’ve known each other.  I’ve made pie, quiche, and a bunch of other stuff in it.

Well, as with anything that is well loved and well used, it finally saw it’s last day and I had to throw it out.  It was cracked all over the place, but I kept using it anyway, because it never leaked through the cracks.  Well, it finally did… several times.

So, now I have to get a new pie plate.   I can’t make my quiche without a pie plate, and I want to make quiche.

I would prefer a stoneware pie plate.  What kind of pie plate do you use?  Do you love it?  Hate it?  Tell me about it, so I can make an informed decision.

Thanks!
