VeggieTales- Happy Together Review plus Giveaway

VeggieTales just released a brand new DVD today, called Happy Together.

VeggieTales Happy Together

This DVD is a triple feature of stories of family, friendship, and faith.

Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler… takes you on a mysterious adventure with Sheerluck Holmes and his venerable sidekick Dr. Watson as they work together, their forensic fortitude can solve any crime.
The Grapes of Wrath… What do you get when a bunch of very cranky grapes make fun of Junior Asparagus? One sad asparagus and one big problem. Will Junior ever be able to forgive them?!
Esther The Girl Who Became Queen tells the story of a new queen. When Esther has the weight of the world on her shoulders and the fate of her people in her hands, can she find the courage to do what’s right?!

It also includes funny and touching thoughts from “Veggie kids” (as voiced by real children).

I just love all things VeggieTales.  My kids enjoy them, as well.  Esther The Girl Who Became Queen (originally released in 2004) has long been one of my favorite VT episodes, so I was really excited to see it included. Mister enjoyed Sheerluck Holmes.  Sister was just mesmerized by all of it.  And, of course, there is a healthy serving of Silly Songs.

We also enjoyed the Veggie Kids bonus feature, and hope that the Veggie Kids make it onto future DVD’s.

Then Sings My Soul- Review plus Giveaway

***Giveaway ended.  Winner notified by email.***

One of my all time favorite hymns is What a Friend We Have in Jesus.  The simple beauty of the lyrics reach deep within.  Perhaps, because I know that it’s author, Joseph Scriven, endured so much loss in his lifetime, yet counted it a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.  Somehow, when I know the story behind a song, or hymn, the chords reverberate more powerfully within.  There have, in fact, been a few songs that I initially detested because they made no sense to me.  But, once I knew the story behind them, I came to appreciate, and yes, even like them.

I recently had an opportunity to review Then Sings My Soul Special Edition by Robert J. Morgan.

Then Sings My Soul Special Edition

Then Sings My Soul Special EditionTrade Paper with French Flaps
By Robert J. Morgan
Stories of the most favorite and beloved seasonal hymns of faith.

Don’t look for a dry recounting of boring historical fact, the devotional-style stories in Then Sings My Soul show the emotion and drama behind the hymns of faith that have changed many lives throughout history. Designed to be personally reflective, these stories speak to the soul and add depth to a meaningful worship time with God through song.

Recounted are stories of the people whose faith led them to write these wonderful seasonal hymns and the people whose faith was affected by reading, hearing, and singing the songs.

Includes words and music to each hymn
Special, softcover, French flap cover design
Ivory paper with brown ink
Jagged edged paper, giving it a classic feel
Complete with hymn index

Use for devotionals, teaching illustrations, introductory remarks for song leaders and music ministers

Then Sings My Soul Special Edition contains the songs and stories of 150 hymns, including well loved favorites like Amazing Grace and lesser known ballads such as There’s a Song in the Air.  It is a paperback book filled with ivory pages that have jagged edges, which really lends to the classic feel.  I really enjoyed reading the stories behind some of these songs.  Some of them I was already familiar with, such as Amazing Grace.  But the stories behind others, such as Blessed Assurance, were new to me.  I think this book would make a perfect gift for anyone who loves hymns.  Because it has a selection of songs for Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving, as well as other favorites, it would be an ideal gift any time of year.

Buy it… Then Sings My Soul Special Edition is available at Christian retailers nationwide and on Amazon.com.

Win it… Thomas Nelson Publishers would like to give one lucky TBC reader their own copy of Then Sings My Soul Special Edition.

Mandatory entry… Tell me your favorite hymn.  If you don’t have a favorite hymn, tell me one you would love to know the story behind.

Review plus #giveaway- A Charlie Brown Valentine

***Giveaway ended.  Winner notified by email.***

Charlie Brown specials are to holidays as chocolate chips are to cookies… they just belong together.  Always have, and always will.  I love Charlie Brown.  Of course, since Chuck is in love with That Little Red Haired Girl (LRHG), I am out of luck, right?  No matter, I am content to watch my little dapper dude on screen and just got A Charlie Brown Valentine on DVD.

A Charlie Brown Valentine_Box Art 2DYou will be smitten with A Charlie Brown Valentine, the latest Peanuts primetime television special just released from Warner Home Video (WHV). A Charlie Brown Valentine arrived in retail outlets on December 28, 2010, just in time for the Valentine’s Day holiday. The DVD features a bonus special titled Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown and retails for $14.97 MSRP.

Love is in the air as Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang make plans to celebrate the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday. It’s the most romantic time of the year and everyone has big hopes of having their dreams of love and friendship fulfilled. Charlie Brown once again finds himself wishing he had the courage to ask the Little Red-Haired Girl to the dance. While he pines away for her, Peppermint Patty and Marcie do their best to woo him.

Unrequited love abounds with the Peanuts gang. Lucy demands kisses and chocolates from Schroeder to no avail. Sally is intent on making Linus her sweet baboo. Snoopy has taken to writing bad poetry on his typewriter. Charlie Brown and his pals may be unlucky in love but they are fortunate in friendship in this heartfelt holiday treat.

DVD Special Features Include:

Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown – Charlie Brown is in love – again! He enlists Linus’ help to find a pretty girl he spotted in the crowd at a football game.

As Hubs and I sat to watch A Charlie Brown Valentine, we joked about that LHRG.  I had NEVER actually seen an episode of Charlie Brown in which she appeared.  Sure, I had heard plenty about her from the lovesick Chuck, but somehow had never caught the LRHG on screen.  Did you know that the LRHG was first mentioned by Charlie Brown in 1961 when he said he would like to eat lunch with her, as he fell in love in the school lunch room?  But, it wasn’t until 1977 that she made her on screen debut, and Charlie Brown was selected to the dance after the football game?  Hmmm.

Anyway, back to the DVD.  Hubs and I popped the DVD in to watch, and I chuckled time after time.  Chuck lamented that he could never talk to that LRHG because she had a pretty face, which makes him nervous, after which Lucy demanded to know why she didn’t make him nervous… she had a pretty face, didn’t she?  Didn’t she?  A Charlie Brown Valentine has several unforgettable lines, and one of my favorites is…  “I’ll tell that Little Red-Haired Girl that I love her. Then I’ll give her a big hug. Then I’ll go bungee-jumping from the moon.”  Bungee-jumping from the moon.  Now there’s an idea!  And for the first time ever, I actually SAW the LRHG.

Sister and I discussed it, and I think Hubs new nickname should be “My Sweet Baboo.”  He wasn’t too thrilled with the idea.

In the special feature, Someday You’ll Find Her, Charlie Brown , Chuck falls in love again… with someone OTHER than that LRHG.  I must confess, I am rather fond of the LRHG, so I wasn’t looking forward to Chuck hooking up with anyone else.  But, the story has a super cute ending.   While these are not the original animations from the 1660’s and ‘70’s, I am really glad we added this one to our collection!
