Total Gym Total Mom- Favorite Exercises

***ETA- Enter the Total Gym XLS Giveaway HERE***

I find it hard to believe that five weeks have passed of the Total Gym Total Mom challenge!  Time flies when you’re having fun, right?

Having had the Total Gym XLS for a while now, I have come to love some of the exercises, and enjoy the rest.

So, which ones do I love the most?  Definitely the oblique twister and the bicep curls.

The oblique twister slims and firms your middle, and lends to the hour glass figure.  It also helps with core strength.

I must confess, I love that my waist line is shrinking (I wore a pair of Hubs shorts this week, and they were too big in the waist!), but even more than that, I love that other things are easier because my core strength has improved.  My center of balance has improved (I tend to be a left leaner, because of years of right hip pain secondary to radiculopathy).  I can do household chores more easily and with less effort… think switching loads of laundry, sweeping, putting away groceries.  I can also do more with my kids, like wrestle and lift them up, with less effort.

I love the biceps curl exercises, as well, because that is where I can most readily see the results.  My thigh and abdominal muscles are still like the part of the iceberg that is submerged… while I know they are there (since I can feel them), they are still covered in a molten layer of fat.   However, because most of the fat has been burned off of my arms, my mamaguns are like the tip of the iceberg.  They stand proud even when I don’t have my arms flexed, and announce that there is much more beneath the surface. With my arms relaxed, I can see that they have changed shape, which is encouraging.  Whether doing seated bicep curls, toe touch bicep curls, or leg curls with biceps curls, I really enjoy this exercise.  I FEEL stronger when I do the bicep curls.  My favorite of the biceps curls exercises is the toe touch bicep curls  because I can stretch, strengthen, and tone in one smooth exercise.

The Total Gym truly is the ONE machine that does it ALL.

My favorite routine looks like this:

Toe touch row
Toe touch bicep curls
Toe touch upright row
Oblique twisters- left
Chest press
Oblique twisters- right

I have worked up to three sets of fifteen reps each, and at an incline of three.  I started at three sets of ten reps each, at an incline of two or less (the chest presses where at a incline of one to start with). So, my strength has certainly improved!

My area of most improvement, I think, is my body fat index.  My body fat percentage is down to 28.7!  When I started the Total Gym Total Mom challenge, my BFI was 30.5!  That is nearly a two percent fat reduction since June 14th!  And while my weight has not gone down as much as I had hoped (the scale seems to be stuck, I think I may need a new one… bwah ha ha), I know that since the weight number isn’t changing, the percentage of body muscle is going up!  Which is just a whole serving of awesomesauce.

I can’t wait to finish out this challenge, and see who wins the challenge.  In my opinion, though, all six of us are winners!  Why not check in with the other ladies, to see how they are doing!  And be sure to leave them some comment love when you do!

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed with the numbers this month.  It is one of those months that I have to look at the cumulative results and be pleased with what I have done “thus far.”  I mean, I lost less than three inches since the last measurements post.  BUT, I’ve carved off nearly forty inches since I started tracking inches in March.  I lost only three pounds in the last month, BUT I’ve lost 57 pounds in seven months.

Did you notice that my BFI dropped below 30?  Hello!  That measurement makes me want to dance.  Seriously, dance!

Of course, I won’t be dancing with my bum knee right now, but I have been LONGING for the day that my body fat percentage dropped below 30!  Remember, in April in my Mamavation post, I mentioned that my BFI was 38% on March 22nd? SAY WHAT? Indeed, in four months, I lost 8.2% of body FAT!

That does my heart good.  Literally.

So, while I am mildly disappointed with my monthly totals, I am positively thrilled with the cumulative numbers!  And, August can be a better month!

That folks, is a total of 35 inches lost since I started measuring inches.  MAN!  I can’t tell you how much I wish I had done the inches measurements back in January!!  My son is 36.5 inches tall.  I have lost almost as many inches as he is tall, and have lost more than my daughter is tall.

Check back tomorrow for a really EXCITING post!

Fifty-Fifty

I have to kind of chuckle as I write this post.

Last week, in my Getting Fit- May Measurements post, I answered the weekly Mamavation Monday question, which was: “Do you know when to back off of your efforts? When is the last time you took a step back in the name of gentle kindness to yourself?”  I answered that I do know when to back off, and had felt pretty good about the fact that I had taken one day off the prior week when I felt a migraine coming on.

Little did I know that I would have to take most of the week off this week.  I exercised on Monday and Tuesday as I normally would, getting up at 5 a.m. and using the elliptical trainer.  Tuesday evening, my throat started feeling scratchy and I was exhausted.  Wednesday morning, the alarm went off and I turned it off.  I just couldn’t do it.  I decided to be kind to myself and give myself the day to recoup from whatever was trying to drag me down.

Thursday… no better…

Friday… more of the same…

Saturday… well, you get the picture.

Sunday… I don’t work out on Sundays.

I had a solid two days of exercise before having to take the rest of the week off courtesy of tree, grass, and mold counts.  As I sit here writing this, my throat is still scratchy, and I don’t have all the energy I have come to enjoy.  Yeah, allergy season, right.

Being unable to exercise is really such a drag!  First, I miss the energy that I gain from exercise.  Second, I miss being able to eat back a portion of the calories I burn.  Having to be diligent and stick to a calorie count, knowing that I hadn’t EARNED anything additional seriously made me consider things this week.  I could either eat a handful of pretzels or three whole squash.  HMMMM.  Let me think on that… squash please.

That being said, I expected to have a no-gain, no-loss week.  BUT the scale had a different answer…

IMG_4783

Apparently, those muscles I have worked hard to earn decided to love me back because I lost 3.8lb this week, bringing my grand total to 50lb lost since the beginning of the year. I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am to have lost 50 pounds.  That is nearly the weight of my two children combined!  As we were getting the kids ready for church, I told my husband that I made goal.

A few minutes later, he presented me with a box and said I needed to open it before we left.  So, I did…

IMG_4794

Inside was a piece of paper on which he printed, “Congratulations on 50lbs!!! Love ya, B”

IMG_4796

And beneath that was the Camelbak I’ve been wanting to get so that I could start 5K training outdoors.

I won’t lie… I literally just busted out crying and hugged him.  He smiled sheepishly and said, “I knew you would be hitting the 50lb mark soon, and I’m proud of you.” I have absolutely NO IDEA what I did to deserve such a kind, supportive, and thoughtful husband, but I am sure glad I did.  Knowing that he was planning on me hitting this milestone, and had absolute faith that I WOULD really means a lot to me.  I truly am blessed!

Oh, and did you notice, he got it in pink!  WOOT!  It is the 50 ounce hydration pack, which should be more than enough for a 5K!

Okay, so now that you are all teary eyed with me, let’s look at this week’s Mamavation Monday question…

In your wellness efforts what is the simplest healthy habit that makes you feel most centered after doing it?

The healthy habit that makes me feel most centered after doing it is exercise.  At the beginning of this year, when I stood on the scale and saw 225lb staring back at me, I felt defeated, and I hate feeling defeated.  Exercise restores my sense of balance and helps me focus on what is important, which is exhilarating.

What helps you feel centered?

I wrote this blog post while participating in the Mamavation Blogging Carnival for a chance to win a pair of Earth Footwear sandals.
