Book Review plus #giveaway- Heaven is for Real

***Giveaway ended. Winner notified by email.***

After my recent review and giveaway of the A Year with God book from Thomas Nelson publishers, the publisher contacted me and asked if I would like to do a review/giveaway of the book Heaven is for Real .  They happened to notice that SIX of the entrants in the A Year with God giveaway mentioned they would like to read it.  Of course, I love a good book, so I agreed.

About Heaven is for Real

A young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven.

Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn’t know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.

Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how “reaaally big” God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit “shoots down power” from heaven to help us.

Told by the father, but often in Colton’s own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.

I have to be honest with you.  When I sat to read Heaven is for Real, I was a bit tentative.  Not about heaven, of course.  I am a Christian, and I know that heaven is my home (I’m just a stranger here).  I was tentative about the potential veracity of the book.  I have heard, and read, some far-fetched “been to heaven and back” stories, and I wasn’t sure where this one would fall on the scale of verity. So, I approached it with the proverbial grain of salt (i.e. accepting a truth but with reservations).

I read the entire 163 pages (which includes the epilogue) of this book in a single day.  At times I laughed, and at times I cried.  And I was reminded of one of the things that I absolutely love about children… their uncanny ability to accept things that adults have difficulty even fathoming.  Children lack the guile and cynicism that seem an inherent attribute of adulthood.  I do not doubt for one second that Colton Burpo had an ethereal encounter.  When his father, Todd Burpo (also a Pastor) documents the conversations in which Colton related his experience, it has the timbre of innocence that is intrinsic to childhood.

While I wouldn’t recommend that the book be used as a foundation for doctrine (there are parts that just don’t sit well with me), it is a simple, easy read that is thought provoking.  If you are looking for an inspirational story about how God can work in the life of a child to bring hope to others, grab a copy.

Buy it… Heaven is for Real can be purchased at many local Christian bookstores and on Amazon.com.

Win it… Thomas Nelson Publishers would like to give one TBC reader their own copy of Heaven is for Real.

Mandatory entry… Simply tell me another title from Thomas Nelson Publishers that you would love to add to your home library.

My Purple Toes Review

My children love to read, so I love new books.  So when I was offered the opportunity to review My Purple Toes, through Family Review Network, of course, I agreed.

I was really excited to receive My Purple Toes.  I don’t know about your kids, but my kids tend to get on this never-ending-merry-go-round of a couple of books, and it is hard to break the cycle.  For weeks on end, we will read about Thomas or about Tremendous Tractors.  Then one day, they will suddenly decide that book no longer holds their interest, and will pick a new one that we have to read for what feels like EVER.

When we received My Purple Toes, Sister immediately claimed it as her very own.  She fell in love with the illustrations and had fun finding the hidden toes on various pages.

My Purple Toes is really a cute story that not only teaches children that it is okay to be different, but also encourages them to embrace their uniqueness.

Sister loved to walk around with the book tucked under her arm, and literally wanted to sleep with it!

Unfortunately, after having the book for only a few days, the binding came apart.  Sister was just devastated when I took it away and told her she couldn’t read it anymore.

Fortunately, though, the book was replaced without incident by the publisher after I notified them, via Family Review Network, of the faulty binding.

They did ask me to send the faulty book back to the manufacturer, so that they could ensure that the faulty binding was an isolated case.  So, I did.

When the new book came in, I showed it to Sister.  She smiled and said, “Piple toes!”  She immediately sat down and started looking at the book.

So far, we have not had any problems with the binding on the replacement book.

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten Review plus Giveaway

***Please Note–This Giveaway Has ENDED. ***

Please see Winners page for winning entrant information.

Do you have a child that will be starting school this fall?  If so, Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? is a must read! We have a couple of years before we have to worry about kindergarten, as Mister is just two and a half.  However, he and Sister both truly enjoyed reading about this silly bull.

This bovine tale describes the the fun filled first day of kindergarten for this shy bull.

From getting his first backpack, to bumbling with scissors, to balancing on tightrope, this calf learns that everyone is special in his own way and that being different from everyone else in school is A.O.K.

Written by Audrey Vernick, and illustrated by Daniel Jennewein, this witty tail tale is sure to boost confidence in the shyest of school age children, and reinforce the importance of learning to share and care.

The illustrations are simple and cute.   Mister and Sister enjoyed the illustrations of the hoof painting, and Mister pointed to the buffalo and said, “That silly buffalo!”  Mister especially enjoyed the pictures of the buffalo using scissors, since that is a skill we are working on currently.

The book touches on all the things that cause first day anxiety—fitting in, who to sit with at lunch, using scissors, following rules, and much more.

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten is witty, playful, and charming.  I am certain that it will be a favorite in our home for a long while.  Especially considering Sister wanted to sleep with it.  That silly Sister.

    What is Your Love Language

    lovelanguages

By far, one of my all time favorite books is The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman.  I first read The Five Love Languages in 1997, shortly after I became a Christian.  I learned SO much the first time I read it.  For the first time in my adult life, I actually felt like I understood my Dad.  My Dad was always the provider.  He worked long, hard hours to provide for the six of us kids and Mom.  And Dad is a man of few words.  From reading The Five Love Languages, I realized that Dad spoke his love for us every time he punched the time clock, every time he worked overtime, and every time he took the odd job snow plowing or repairing someone’s car.

Since 1997, I have tried to read The Five Love Languages at least once a year.  I really think that I gain fresh, new perspective into the relationships in my life each time I read it.

I was recently reminded of the book while at a Children’s Ministry Team Leader meeting, and need to get it out and read it for 2010.  I am currently reading three other books (The Family You’ve Always Wanted: Five Ways You Can Make It Happen, also by Chapman; Dr Kevin Leman’s Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child’s Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days; and Ravi Zacharias’ Beyond Opinion: Living the Faith We Defend)so it may be August before I get to start it.  August is just a few days away, though.

While at the ministry meeting, we decided it would be fun if each of us took the Love Languages quiz and then shared our results with each other, as a way to better understand each other.   I have had bookmarked an online quiz that allows you to assess your love language quickly.   I took it.  Here are my results…

My Primary Love Language is Words of Affirmation

    My Detailed Results:
    Words of Affirmation: 11
    Quality Time: 8
    Acts of Service: 6
    Physical Touch: 4
    Receiving Gifts: 1

I feel loved when… I am told that I am loved, or appreciated, or talented, or… Pretty much, I am a words girl.  Words will either build me up or tear me down.

Unhappiness in relationships is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. It can be helpful to know what language you speak and what language those around you speak.  How about you? Do you know your primary Love Language?

    Take the Quiz!

I would love to know your results, too.  What did you think of the quiz?  Do you think the result is an accurate assessment of your love language?

The Five Love Languages is available on Amazon
