Being Kind and Caring- Paws & Tales

I’ve listened to the Insight for Living radio broadcast off and on for years, and was excited to learn about  Paws & Tales, a video and radio series aimed at helping build godly character into kids.  There are currently eight DVD’s in the Paws & Tales series, and “Being Kind & Caring” is the newest release.

About the Being Kind & Caring (Paws & Tales) DVD

image

Being Kind & Caring is the eighth DVD in the Paws & Tales series. It is based on Ephesians 4:32 and Philippians 2:3-4 and contains two episodes that teach kids about kindness and caring for one another. In the first episode, “The Hullabaloo at Hunker Hill,” C. J. and his friends learn about forgiveness and how to put it into action. In “The Great Go-Kart Race,” the team discovers how to work together.

I appreciated that Paws & Tales tackles tough subjects, like forgiveness, and show them in action.

Since my kids are younger, and I am actively teaching that arguing is not acceptable behavior, it concerned me that there was quite a bit of bickering, as well as some name calling, among the characters (though not all shown).   One character calls another “cat breath” and while it isn’t a bad name, per se, I am just beginning to convince my kids that you can’t add the word head to any other and call your sibling a name with it.

Mister and Sister both enjoyed the stories and the music.  I appreciated that the DVD included the words of the songs on screen, especially since Mister is learning to read.  This DVD certainly provided some teaching moments, and I am glad that we watched it together.   While I will likely put this one away for a few months, while I work on teaching my kids not to argue and not to call each other names, I would love to add the other Paws & Tales DVD’s to our video library and look forward to future titles.

Paws & Tales DVD’s are available from http://tyndale.com/, on Amazon, and wherever Christian DVD’s are sold.

I received a complimentary DVD from Tyndale as part of the Tyndale Blog Network.

Rock N Learn Sight Words (5/4)

It is no secret we are fans of the Rock ‘N Learn educational DVD series.  I’ve yet to find a rocknlearnlogoDVD produced by Rock ‘N Learn that my kids don’t enjoy and I don’t appreciate.  We just added the Sight Words DVD to our library, and I am a fan!

About the Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words DVD…

imageSight words are the  words most frequently used in the English language.  The Sight Words DVD helps students learn to read them automatically.  Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words boosts reading and spelling skills, as a supplement to phonics-based strategies. Children learn more than sixty sight words with engaging characters, entertaining songs, and fun practice.  Words are presented in context to help students build reading comprehension. Includes all pre-primer Dolch words, the top 20 from Fry’s, and more.  A bonus section helps kids with word shapes and spelling skills.

Pre-k & up. Approx. 50 minutes

Mister has been working on learning to read.  Math is his specialty, and reading is not coming quite as easily, which is frustrating for him.  Adding Sight Words to our video library helps take the work out of learning, and add the fun back in.  When learning is fun, frustration levels are lower, which makes a happy homeschooling Mom.

His First Letter

Aunt Cheri told Mister that she would like to be his pen pal.  After I explained pen pals to him, he broke into a wide grin and asked me to help him write a letter. He told me what to write, and then he copied the sentence.  He drew a picture of Aunt Cheri, too.

Then he wrote his name on the envelope…

carried it to the mailbox…

and lifted the flag to tell the mail carrier to take it.

Man, that does a Mama’s heart proud!

Aunt Cheri is one lucky lady, to be getting his first letter, cuz this proud Mommy selfishly wanted to keep it for his memory box.  I’ll put the pictures in there, instead, though!

Rock N Learn Letter Sounds (4/6)

rocknlearnlogoI’ve told you before about how much Mister and Sister enjoy the Rock ‘N Learn educational DVD’s.  We’ve recently added the Rock ‘N Learn Letter Sounds to our video library, and I wanted to tell you about it.

Rock 'N Learn Letter SoundsThe Rock ‘N Learn Letter Sounds DVD is filled with  energetic music and fun games to build excitement about learning to read. The Letter Sounds DVD covers the most common sound that each letter makes.  The Letter Sounds DVD, which is all new, with its “on-screen mouth” shows how to form each sound. Ages 4–7.

Approx. 62 minutes

Mister and Sister adore all of our Rock ‘N Learn DVD’s, and this one is no exception.  In no time at all, they were both running around making the letter sounds at random.  I love that the DVD reinforces the lessons I try to teach.

Check out this clip and you’ll understand why…

Sister recently had her 3-year DIAL exam, given by our parent educator with “Parents as Teachers.”  Our educator was absolutely floored that Sister could identify her letter sounds, and said that children aren’t even scored for letter sounds until at least age five.  I was one proud mama!

Teach My Preschooler plus giveaway (4/1)

My kids love to learn, and I do what I can to make sure they have plenty around to help them do it.  I recently received, for review, the Teach My Preschooler kit from Teach My.

Teach My

Teach My was founded in 2007 by Mom Entrepreneur, Christy Cook. Christy realized that parents are the most important teachers, when trying to educate her then 18-month old son, Finn.  She scoured educational supply stores to find learning activities only to find that no one offered all-in-one kit.  After teaching her own son to read, she aimed to make it easier (and less expensive) for other parents to do the same, resulting in the award winning Teach My Baby, Teach My Toddler and Teach My Preschooler kits.

Teach My PreschoolerThe Teach My Preschooler Kit is an all-in-one learning kit for preschooler aged children, ages 3-6 yrs. The kit is divided into four sections—Ready to Read, Ready to Print, Ready for 1-100, and Ready for Math (addition and subtraction)—to teach your preschooler.  NO batteries and NO DVD’s are required to use the kit.  It includes an assortment of goodies aimed at teaching your preschooler the basics they need to know with 10 readers, flashcards, posters, a printing guide, and “magic” drawing board.   The four sections are available individually, as well, but you do save if you buy them all in one kit.  Plus, you get the nifty carrying case, so you take your preschool on the go.

The Teach My Preschooler kit is really a great tool for the parent that wants to make learning fun, get their preschooler ready for kindergarten, or just refresh their preschoolers skills.  Mister and Sister both enjoy using the kit.  Math is Mister’s strong point, so he literally skipped the Numbers to 100 and went straight for the addition and subtraction flip books.  Here’s Mister doing some math with it…

Sister enjoys being read to, so she loved the readers and making the letter sounds.

I like that the addition and subtraction books are flip book style and that they have the thicker coated pages.  In fact, that is the only thing I would change about the kit, is make the other books (the readers and the numbers to 100 book) flip style and coated pages. Of course, that would probably add to the cost of the kits. Otherwise, we love it.   I especially love that I can use it with BOTH kids, and that BOTH enjoy it.  All in all, I wish I had known about Teach My when my kids were a lot younger.  It would have saved me a lot of hours and resources (not to mention cold hard cash)!

The Teach My Baby, Teach My Toddler, and Teach My Preschooler products are available at http://www.teachmy.com/, at Walmart, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, and on Amazon.

Now, one lucky TBC reader will win their own Teach My kit (winner will choose Teach My Baby, Teach My Toddler, or Teach My Preschooler).
