The Amazing Mat Review plus Giveaway

With the recent spring-like weather in St. Louis, my kids have been able to play outdoors more.  Which they love.  And they have been tracking in dirt more, which I LOATHE.

When I recently received an opportunity to review The Amazing Mat, an anti-bacterial adhesive mat that traps dirt, germs, and bacteria and KEEPS THEM OFF YOUR FLOOR, I was like, “Yah, baby!”

Each mat has thirty layers specifically engineered for capturing mud, dirt, allergens, fungus, mold and even feces.   When the top sheet of the mat is dirty, you simply peel away the recyclable sheet to reveal a new layer.

Can’t beat that, right?

When The Amazing Mat arrived, I placed it in front of our back door.  Easy peasy.

Mister wanted to know what it was, and what it’s supposed to do.  I explained to him that it is “traps” crumbs and dirt, off of our feet, to help keep the floor clean.  Sister playing in the mudHe immediately brushed some crumbs off of the table onto the mat, and walked onto it.

I didn’t expect him to DO that.  I was about to warn him that he shouldn’t walk on it without shoes on.  Because he is affected by Hay Wells Syndrome, the skin on his feet is extremely delicate.  When he stepped onto The Amazing Mat with his bare feet, my heart skipped a beat.  In my minds eye, I saw the skin peeling off of the bottoms of his feet followed by weeks of wound treatment.  I immediately picked him up to examine the bottoms of his feet, and to my surprise, they were fine.

Crisis averted.

While Mister and I were discussing The Amazing Mat, Sister was outside, splashing in a mud puddle.  She loves playing outdoors.  Rain. Sleet. Snow.  It doesn’t matter, she doesn’t care.  She just wants to be outdoors.

She came in, asking me to wash her hands, and when I looked down, I could not have been happier to have The Amazing Mat on my floor!

Muddy Boots on The Amazing Mat

Once she was done playing outside, I left her boots on the mat by the door.  After the mud dried, I simply removed the dirty layer, and BOOSH!  It was a clean layer WITHOUT THE MOP!

Amazing Mat with Muddy Boots

The Amazing Mat ($29.95) is available in six different designs and can be purchased at www.theamazingmat.com.

I can’t say that I will always use The Amazing Mat, but I WILL be putting it down on rainy and muddy days to save myself from having to mop the entire floor!

Where would you put The Amazing Mat?

Three Major Bunk Bed Variations to Consider

Bunk beds aren’t only for young children, and they certainly aren’t uniform in style, size, or overall design.  So if you’re searching to maximize the floor space in a bedroom or dorm room, while also providing cozy sleeping arrangements for two people, you can easily find a bunk bed set that works for two young siblings or two grown men.  Not every bunk set is the right choice depending on who is using it and what the spatial requirements of the room it’s being placed in are, but the following three variations on bunks should make it simpler to choose one that’s right for you.

Twin-over-Twin Bunks

Ideal for younger children sharing a room together, twin-over-twin bunk beds have plenty of room for bodies that don’t take up much space just yet.  Since children often twin over full bunk bedspend much time playing with toys in their bedrooms, this leaves a larger amount of space available for floor play, not to mention extra storage space where dressers and toy chests can go.  Though you may need to upgrade to larger bunks if these siblings continue to share a room in the future, chances are one bunk set is all you’ll need.

Twin-over-Full Bunks

Some families really don’t have a lot of room to utilize, and siblings of vastly different ages are therefore required to share a room. Perfect for a teenager who shares a room with a grade school-aged sibling, twin-over-full bunk beds provide a larger, sturdier space for the older child, and a more than sufficient amount of space for the younger kid.  With many sets, there is also additional storage space under the lower bunk for the older child, allowing him some extra private space to store personal belongings.  This bed setup is also ideal if you have an adult guest often but have nowhere else for him to sleep other than in your child’s bedroom, as the guest can easily take the larger, lower bed without getting in the way.

Full-over-Full Bunks

Especially fit for dorm rooms and cramped apartments, two adults or older teenagers can comfortably fit in the bed space provided by full-over-full bunk beds.  Some colleges don’t supply bunk beds already, or they do but only provide long, thin bunks that aren’t best suited for all body types.  If your available bedroom or dorm room space is limited, but you still want to comfortably sleep two people in the room, full-over-full bunks are the way to go.

I bought a KitchenAid icecreammaker Attachment

I recently stumbled upon this post, by A Sweet Pea Chef, and immediately started thinking about making my own pumpkin frozen yogurt.  image

Admit it, now you want some!

Then I thought about the lemon-lemon frozen yogurt that the local food truck guy was out of when he brought our delivery order two weeks ago.  Then I remembered a coconut avocado ice cream recipe that I ran across a few months ago (man, I hope I bookmarked it) and the frozen fantasy was on!

kitchenaid artisan stand mixerProblem is, we didn’t own an ice cream maker.

<—I do own this, however!

My KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer.

In cobalt blue, no less.

I love my KitchenAid mixer.

We received it as a wedding gift (Thanks, Uncle Tom and Aunt Jenny!), and it has been well used loved over the last (almost) six years.  At some point, Hubs bought the mixer attachment pack for me (I don’t recall the occasion) and I have used it for everything.

LITERALLY.

From making cakes, to making baby food (with the fruit/vegetable strainer attachment), to grinding chicken (with the food grinder attachment) for chicken soft tacos.  Don’t ask me about the time that I processed fourteen large pumpkins with it.  My mixer gets it work out.

So, when I started thinking about an ice cream maker, I thought, “there has to be an attachment for that.”  I cannot afford to surrender anymore counter space to small kitchen appliances!  My mantra is, “find the attachment for it.”  So, I started shopping (on Amazon) for an ice cream maker attachment.

When I found one, I tweeted about it.   A friend tweeted back, “@thatbaldchick I have one of the #icecreammaker attachments they are AWESOME! esp. for avoiding food allergies!”

That’s it.  I knew I had to have one.

Mister has a peanut allergy, and you wouldn’t believe all the treats we have to forego because of it!

Problem was, every listing I saw, of the ice cream maker attachment, showed the picture of the lift stand mixer rather than the tilt head mixer that I own.  Hubs saw my frustration and told me to just start shopping for a separate appliance, but my mother-in-law suggested that I check the owner’s manual to see if the attachment was compatible with my mixer.

Why didn’t I think of that?

Of course, since my mixer is nearly six years old, my owner’s manual is in the basement somewhere, in a box full of owner’s manuals.  Slim chance I am going to find it.  Even slimmer still, since I don’t want to go near that box! LOL.   So, I did what any other internet savvy shopper would do.  I went to the KitchenAid website.  After perusing the owner’s manual for my mixer, I checked out the owner’s manual for the actual ice cream maker attachment.  YIPPEE!  It is approved for use with ALL Kitchenaid stand mixers.

So, I jumped back on Amazon and bought one.  I used part of my Total Gym Total Mom prize money for it.  And now I am thinking of all the yummolicious frozen treats I can make once it comes in.

Kind of ironic, right?

That I ordered an ice cream maker with money I won for getting into shape?

I don’t feel guilty, though, because I will be making frozen yogurt!  Ha!

Do you make your own ice cream or frozen yogurt?

Have any yummolicious (or strange) recipes you want to share?

My Kitchen Reno Dream

AmazonHomeImprovementSweepsThis morning I received an email from Amazon.  They thought I might like to know about a chance to win a $1,000 Amazon.com Gift Card.

Um, yeah!

I might.

LOL.

So, I got to thinking.

What would I DO with a $1000 Gift Card from Amazon?

Well, since the sweeps is hosted by the Kitchen and Bath department, I browsed there first, and found a few things I might spend 1G on.

side by side refrigerator

My kitchen reno dream…

This GE Refrigerator would be a nice replacement for the white number I have in my kitchen now.

I prefer side-by-side models because my back just can’t take pulling out a loaded freezer drawer.

I don’t have anything against white refrigerators.

HOWEVER…  my dishwasher, microwave, convection oven, and coffee pot are all stainless.

The white kind of doesn’t go.  Not to mention that the trim around the ice dispenser broke off years ago, and it just isn’t pretty.

KWIM?electric stove

Speaking of not matching… my stove range is also white.  White and black (translate- ugly). So, I found this one…

Isn’t she a beaut?

While I would PREFER a gas range (I learned how to cook on a gas range), our house is equipped for electric.  And this the prettiest electric stove I have seen, and it is GE’s Clean Design.

I like that the controls are at your fingertips on the front of the stove, rather than on a backsplash at the back of the stove.  Of course, I would have to train little fingers to leave the stove alone, but they are already pretty good about not touching it.

I love that the oven is self cleaning, too!

Also on my wish list item right now is the new Kindle Fire.

imageAh, back to my kitchen reno dream…

I am absolutely drooling over this black maple flooring.  I would love to have this gorgeous hardwood throughout my house!  I would like  the look of a distressed black with veins of gray as well.

Since I AM a Klutz (with a capital K), and we’ve been told that it isn’t wise to have wooden floors in the kitchen—as it may become damaged when things are dropped on it—we would have to use ceramic tile or something else in the kitchen.

With the black maple hardwood throughout the house, how gorgeous would this black granite tile be in the kitchen, with those new stainless appliances!

with this tumbled mosaic tile for the back splashes…

Then, just for the pure shock value, I would paint the walls canary yellow and get a vinyl wall decal that says “The fondest memories are made when gathered around the table.”  That, or “Kitchen closed, this chick’s had it.”  LOL.

My husband chuckles at with me, because I typically have a hard time spending money (when I have it).  I tend to sit on it for a while.  Let it ruminate.  I mean, what if I spend it on one thing, and find something the next day that I would LOVE to have, but am fresh out of greenbacks to pay for it.  Since we refuse to live on credit, I would be fresh out of luck!  So, large money decisions takes time… and prayer.  We’ve been wanting to renovate our kitchen for a while now (can you tell?), so I think this is one instance in which I could dispense of the money quickly.

Of course, I haven’t won the sweepstakes (YET), but I can dream, right?

Oh, yeah, if you would like to enter, simply visit the Amazon Home Improvement Sweepstakes Facebook Page.
