The Little House That Stood

The Little House That Stood is VeggieTales history in the making!  For the first time ever, VeggieTales is doing a parody of a beloved nursery rhyme and INCLUDING the three pigs in the video.  Veggies and bacon, it doesn’t get better than this!

In the parable of the three builders, the Wise and Foolish builders meet the Three Little Pigs.  The story features all the VeggieTales favorites—Bob, Larry, Junior Aparagus, The French Peas (my fave), Madame Bluberry, and others.  Of course, while the others build in folly, only Bob builds his houses on a solid foundation.  Even the story of Humpty Dumpty is retold around the good neighbor parable in “The Good Egg of Gooseville.”  YAY.

This is quite possibly one of my all time favorite VeggieTales DVDs, ranking right up there with Rack, Shack, and Benny.  It is seriously comical.

As we were walking through Home Depot on Sunday, Mister kept singing “Happy Toof Day, Happy Toof Day.”  I thought he was saying Tuesday, and said, “Hey, it’s only Sunday.”  He laughed and said, “No, Mom, it’s the silly song on The Little House That Stood.  It’s the funniest movie ever.”  That, my friends, is a whopping endorsement from my five year old!

Abel’s Field

It would seem that Seth McCardle has been dealt a losing hand in life.  After his mother died, his father abandoned him and his two young sisters.  His own brother, Keith, wants nothing Abel's Field_thumb[7]to do with him.  He works multiple jobs trying to provide for his sisters.  He is bullied daily at school by members of the football team.  It couldn’t get worse.

Or could it?

When he fights back to the bullies, he is singled out for punishment and is assigned to work detail with the groundskeeper, Abel.  As it turns out, Abel may be the only person on the planet that understands the struggles that young Seth faces.

Abel’s Field is a compelling story that shows that you always have a choice, even when it may seem there is none. It showcases the devastating effect alcoholism can have on a family, as well as the determination of one young man to rise above it all. The friendship between Abel and Seth, though unlikely, is believable and both are struggling with decisions they have made and that they need to make. It also emphasizes that Jesus forgives sins, and that we have to forgive ourselves.

Hubs and I enjoyed watching this movie.

That being said, I was disturbed by the fact that Seth left his sisters in the care of Abel when he barely knew them.  I am a freak about who I let watch my kids, and that would never happen.  It also bothered me that it wasn’t until the school offered him a full time position that they would run a background check, with fingerprints, on Abel.  I don’t want anyone working with my kids, part time or not, that hasn’t submitted to a background check.

All in all, we are glad we added Abel’s Field to our DVD shelf.

Run to the Well

This morning I was reading Genesis 24 during my devotional time.  I’ve read it many times before, but this morning verses 18-20 just jumped out at me.  Do you know how much water ten camels can drink?  Up to 40 buckets.

Forty.

Rebekah was not only willing to serve, she ran back to the well.

run to the well

Not only did she run to the well, she kept pulling buckets until all of the camels had finished drinking.

I don’t know why I’ve always thought it’d be like watering a dog.

It wasn’t.

It was forty buckets of water worth of willing to serve.

That is the faithful servant’s heart that I aspire to.

Speaking of aspirations… As you  may have noticed, I haven’t been posting nearly as much lately.  I am currently studying for my pastoral license.  It’s a lot of work, as it should be.  Between that, homeschooling the kidlets, the holiday season, and life in general, things have been really busy around here.  Now that the new year is upon us, I am hopeful that time will allow me to post more frequently.

In the meantime, I run to the well.

Unleash! by Perry Noble

Hubs and I often tune into NewSpring Church services, via the internet, where Perry Noble is pastor.  We really enjoy Perry’s teaching style, and his sermons are timely and relevant.  Unleash by Perry NobleBack in September, we received a copy of Perry’s new book Unleash! in it’s pre-release .pdf format for review.  I was actually supposed to write my review of it by September 25th, as part of the book launch team.

Trouble was, I had bitten off more than I could chew with the home remodel, and then I had to start seeing the pain management specialist, too. Etc.  Etc.  So, the book languished on my PC.  That is in no way a reflection of the text, but of my poor organizational skills and time management (or lack thereof).

Anyway.

Back to Perry Noble’s book.

Perry start’s off the book with a story about him driving his mother-in-law’s Mustang.  After driving it all day, he wondered if the car had an power under the hood.  Duh.  He then unleashed the power harnessed therein and stomped the one on the right.  Yah.  That one.  Very quickly he realized he needed to let off the gas before he lost control.  Afterward, he thought “If I had known this car had that kind of power, I would have driven it a lot differently today—and I would have had a lot more fun while I was at it.”  Perry goes on to correlate that experience to the Christian life and how many of us go through life without a clue as to the power that is available to us.

Perry goes on to ask “If God, the Creator of the universe, created on purpose, with a purpose, and for for a purpose, then why in the world would be willing to settle for anything less (p. 64)?”  He negates the excuses one might use  and uses the life of David to illustrate what living life Unleashed! looks like.  He uses humor and personal life stories to keep it real.

Check out this book trailer…

Overall, I wouldn’t hesitate to give this book to someone seeking a relationship with the Lord or to a new Christian.

Unleash! is available at http://www.unleashbook.com/, on Amazon, and wherever Christian books are sold.  The Unleash! curriculum, which corresponds with the book, is due to be released this month.
