A Perfect Pet for Peyton

We recently had the opportunity to review A Perfect Pet for Peyton, a new book by Rick A Perfect Pet for PeytonOsborne and Gary Chapman (author of The Five Love Languages, which you KNOW is a book I love).  A Perfect Pet for Peyton tells an entertaining and playful story of five children who each, with the help of Mr. Chapman and the unique pets at his special emporium, discover their own personal love language. Children and parents alike will experience firsthand the power of the love languages as they cuddle up and spend precious time together reading this book over and over again.

I was excited to read this book with my kids.  It is 64 pages long, and chock full of fun, colorful pictures.  There is a hidden details in every large picture, which makes it a seek and find game for the kids, too.  There is also a list of animals every couple of pages that the kids are encouraged to find in the illustrations.  The book isn’t just a great lesson, it’s a great story, which makes this teaching tool a whole heap of fun for them to listen to, and fun for me to read, too.  There are a LOT of sentences with P’s in them.  You know how the old rhyme from Mother Goose, “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,” could cause your tongue to stumble if you are not careful?  Yep.  THOSE kind of fun and hilarious sentences are scattered throughout the story.

Both of my kids enjoyed the story, and wanted me to read it a second time right away.

What is Your Love Language

It’s that time of year, again, when I am reminded that it is time to plan my annual reading of  The Five Love Languages

lovelanguages By far  The 5 Love Languages, by Gary Chapman, is one of my all time favorite books.   It is one of a handful of books that I will read more than once. I usually can’t stand to read the same book twice, because I know what is going to happen and it just kills the enjoyment for me.  This book, however, is a worthy exception.

I first read The Five Love Languages in 1997, shortly after I became a Christian.  I learned SO much the first time I read it.  For the first time in my adult life, I actually felt like I understood my Dad.  My Dad was always the provider.  He worked long, hard hours to provide for the six of us kids and Mom.  Dad is a man of few words, and he didn’t often say I love you… at least, when we were younger.  From reading The Five Love Languages, I realized that Dad spoke his love for us every time he punched the time clock, every time he worked overtime, and every time he took the odd job snow plowing or repairing someone’s car.  I didn’t understand then, nor did he, that we spoke different love languages.

Since 1997, I have tried to read The Five Love Languages at least once a year.  I really think that I gain fresh, new perspective into the relationships in my life each time I read it.

2012 is nearly a quarter finished (can you believe it?) and I have to get this book back in my stack.  I think it is essential reading for everyone who loves anyone!

I took the love language test, available online.  Here are my results…

My Primary Love Language is Words of Affirmation

Words of Affirmation: 11

I feel loved when… I am told that I am loved, or appreciated, or talented, or…

Pretty much, I am a words girl.

Words will either build me up or tear me down.

Now that Dad understands that, he never hangs up the phone without saying the words “I love you.”  And if he does, one of us is quick to hit redial (bet you can’t guess which one).

Unhappiness in relationships is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. It can be helpful to know what language you speak and what language those around you speak.  How about you? Do you know your primary Love Language?

Take the Quiz!

I would love to know your results, too.  What did you think of the quiz?  Do you think the result is an accurate assessment of your love language?

The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie (3/8)

My children suffer from an apparent hereditary malady… They are insatiable bibliophiles.

The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie

It’s a good thing the treatment for said malady is pretty simple… more books.

I recently received The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie, by Rodney Mack, for review and added it to my arsenal against  childhood boredom.

About The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie… “Jimmy and Charlie used to be orphaned cats with no place to call home. Until one day when the brothers find a home on a farm! The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie is a collection of three short stories of excitement and adventure following the two cats as they explore their new world and make lifelong friends. This is the perfect book for young readers to learn, along with Jimmy and Charlie, important lessons about God’s faithfulness, his good purpose, and the importance of obeying your parents.”

The Adventures of Jimmy and CharlieMister and Sister both really enjoyed reading about Jimmy and Charlie, albeit Sister is more the animal lover and enjoyed the stories more.  The stories are told from Jimmy’s point of view, and induced lots of questions.  Like, “what’s an opossum?”  and  “why do dogs have to protect cows from coyotes?” and “why do cats chase frogs?” and “why can’t I hear cats talking?”  and “what does adventure mean?”

I had to chuckle at the names of the neighbors cats, Smith and Wesson.  I also appreciated that the book pointed out the importance of obedience, as well as reinforcing that God loves us.

The Adventures of Jimmy and Charlie is available in print and digital format from Amazon.

BooBoo by Olivier Dunrea

Another favorite of Sister’s is a book about a curious blue gosling, called BooBoo, that likes to eat.

BooBoo is one of a series of books by Olivier Dunrea about cute and quirky goslings.  Aside from authoring well-loved children’s books, Olivier Dunrea, is a painter and a sculptor.  Gossie & Friends, the gaggle of tales about cute and quirky goslings, began in 2001 when Dunrea sat staring out his studio window as Canada geese flew overhead.  As he sat sketching them, he started drawing them wearing red rubber boots, a pair of which sat on his bookshelf.  Thus, Gossie was born, as well as her friends.  BooBoo is one of them.

BooBoo the gosling likes to eat from morning to night and thinks everything is “good food.”

Well, almost everything.

Age Level: 3 and up

Series: Gossie & Friends

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company

We first met BooBoo at the local library, and Sister fell in love.  The book is simple, with just a few sentences per page.  The illustrations are cute and colorful.  Most importantly, it is FUN and FUNNY.   In the story, BooBoo eats different things and then says, “Good Food.”  She learns, however, that not everything makes good food.

Sister goes into panic mode if she can’t find her BooBoo.  And if someone else picks up her BooBoo, she says, “Hey, that’s my BooBoo.  BooBoo’s a gusling.”  It’s funny.

Hubs had adopted BooBoo’s simple phrase of “Good Food” to give his approval to different things.  “Good Food,” said BooBoo he’ll say after a meal.  Or, “Good show,” said BooBoo after a television show.  He’s cute and funny, too.

BooBoo gets 5 out of 5 stars around here!

Gossie & Friends books are available on Amazon as boardbooks, hardback books, and for your Kindle, too!
