Mister had colic something fierce.  I mean, I feel like he spent the first six months of his life screaming.  When he was swaddled, though, he was generally content.  He enjoyed swaddling far past the 6 week mark, and would cry if not swaddled.  Sister and Little Miss had tо аdјust tо being swаddled, and seemed to outgrow it far sooner than Mister did.

Here are a few tips for keeping baby safe and comfortable while swaddled.

  • Get a snug swaddle.  It is best to wrap baby very snugly, even if baby fusses at first.  After a few days, most babies relax at the sight of the swaddle and crave that snug feeling.
  • Keep the room cool.  The room temperature where the baby sleeps should be comfortable (67-72°F).  It is best to swaddle baby in a light onesie.
  • Leave Room to GrowA swaddle should be snug at top, and looser at the bottom.
  • Position the swaddle blanket under baby’s chin.  The blanket should start slightly below the top of baby’s shoulders – do not have the blanket near the mouth or nose.
  • Keep baby’s arms at his/her side.  If they can bust out of the swaddle blanket, your efforts are wasted– as may be your night of sleep– as baby will wake when she flails her arms.  Try using a blanket specifically designed for swaddling, like the Miracle Blanket, to achieve the perfect swaddle.
  • Know when to stop swaddling.  Once baby can roll over onto their stomach (usually around 4 months), you should stop swaddling.

As I said, Mister dearly loved being swaddled.  It wasn’t until he started rolling over that  I stopped swaddling him!   Of course, swaddling should be used for sleep times (i.e. naps or night) and baby should be free during non-sleep times to explore the world around them.   In my opinion, giving baby the security and comfort of swaddling during sleep times, gives them the security and courage they need to explore their world as they grow.
