Small Talk Six Rewind 1

As I mentioned in my Small Talk Six July 17 post, I missed an entire MONTH of Small Talk Six.  Seriously?  Ugh.   But, because I think the topics were great, I am going to do a few Small Talk Six Rewinds, to cover the one’s I missed.

Small Talk Six at MomDot is a weekly Meme with a different topic.  You can learn more about the Meme and the list of topics for Small Talk Six 2010 by going here.

The rules are:

Grab a Small Talk Six button for your post and sidebar.  Then post on your blog your response to the assigned topic of the week.  Your response can be as brief or elaborate as you wish, but must be in 6, i.e. a list of 6 words, 6 phrases, 6 sentences, 6 paragraphs, or 6 photos, etc…

The topics I missed are…

June 26 – 6 ways you indulge or spoil your children

July 3 – 6 of your favorite things that are red, white, or blue

July 10 – 6 t-shirts you’ve read and loved

Today I will cover the “6 ways you indulge or spoil your children”

Of course, I will offer a disclaimer and say that my kids are not spoiled…. tee hee hee…

  1. My kids watch DVD’s.  Of course, they are educational (Sesame Street, Elmo, Barney, Bob the Builder, Hermie, etc, etc) and were it not for the DVD player, my laundry would NEVER get done.
  2. My kids get Smarties from Pastor Debbie every Sunday.  I am NOT a fan of giving candy to toddlers.   It’s just not good for them… their teeth, their BEHAVIOR.  However, Pastor Debbie LOVES to give all the kids candy from the candy jar after class on Sunday’s, so my kids are allowed to get in line and get one pack of Smarties.
  3. Mister gets to “help” me in the grocery store.  IF he is behaving appropriately, I allow him to walk along beside the cart and I hand him the canned goods or boxes and let him put them in the cart as we shop.  Then when we get to check out, I let him help put things on the conveyor.  IF all of that goes well, and he is still behaving, he gets to hold the receipt.  Yes, it makes my shopping trips twice, if not three times, as long.  But, because I am talking to him about the groceries, the prices, what we are going to make with them, etc, I feel like it is a teaching opportunity.
  4. Sister has an easy button, or pacifier.  She is 17 months old.  She went without it for several days in June, but it didn’t work out so well, so I let her have it back.  I figure she bottle broke herself at 10 months, if she wants her “Paci” she can have it for a few more months.
  5. My kids both love cheese slices, so we buy a LOT of them.  I usually buy one or two packs of American slices every WEEK.  I figure they need the calcium, and they eat enough fruit and vegetables to keep them from getting constipated, so what’s the harm?
  6. My kids think the silicone oven mitts are “quack quacks” and love to use them to “get” each other.  So, I let them.  I even bought one that looks like a ducks bill.  I know they are not intended as toys, but it’s just too stinking funny to watch them chase each other with an oven mitt on their hand going “Kak kak kak kak.”

Wow, I had a hard time thinking of six.  Maybe because it’s 2 a.m. when I am writing this post.  And maybe because my kids really are not spoiled… Perhaps I should ask my Mom or MIL Barb how I spoil or indulge my children.  I’m sure they could each come up with a few answers!

How about you?  How do you indulge or spoil your children?

B90 Check-In Deuteronomy

As I mentioned yesterday, in I have a confession to make,  I have joined the 90-Day Challenge hosted by MomsToolBox.com.

Bible-in-90-Days1

I’d been reading the Chronological Bible plan over at YouVersion and was up to 1 Samuel (day 103), so it really didn’t pose a problem to jump in two weeks late on the challenge.  I had read all of Deuteronomy in June, so, yesterday’s reading was a bit of a refresher, which was nice.  Of course, anytime you commit to STRIVE to grow in your relationship with Christ, things happen and your resolve will be challenged.  In the course of the afternoon/evening, my kids decided several times that they would be just completely obnoxious.  One even broke the glass to the coffee table after having been told not to play with it.  Ugh.

But, I did get my reading done for yesterday, and did start using SOAP again, and thought I would share it…

soap_19127_lg SDeuteronomy 24:16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

O- Jeremiah 31:30 also says that every man will die for his own sin.  I am grateful that I am not judged for the sins of my mother and father.  I am even more grateful that my children will not be judged for MY sin!

A- Although my children will not be judged FOR my sin, their lives are affected BY my sin.  Just as my life was affected by the sins of my Mom and Dad.  Knowing that they will not be judged for my sin does not negate my responsibility to them to live a life that is Holy and pleasing to God.  Saying “Oh, they won’t be judged FOR this sin” and still doing it would be a bit like saying, “I know why I have period cramps…”  It doesn’t make the reality of the effect of those cramps any less painful and possibly damaging.  To put it in another light…

P-Lord, when I am tempted to sin, help me to think of the potential life-long effect my selfish actions may have on my kids.  Remind me daily that they are affected by my decisions.  I want my children to grow up and love you, which means they have to see me loving you.  Help me to avoid the complacency that is so easy to step into.  I thank you that you are still working on me.  Please, keep it up.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Reading Deuteronomy 23-34 was a challenge.  Of course, since the kiddos were awake, I did NOT get all of that reading done at once.  In between reading, I read stories to them, made snacks, filled cups, gave medicines, cooked dinner, brushed teeth, cleaned messes, etc, etc.  So it felt like it took all day!

One thing I know for sure, I am going to have to rearrange some things in my routine to ensure that I am able to study.

As a side note, my kids were thrilled with me singing their songs all day.  Mister would run in and say, “sing Bible” which means sing Jesus Loves Me.  Then I would get halfway through it, and he would say, “sing Children” which translates sing Jesus Loves the Little Children.  I also was singing Joel Hemphill’s He’s Still Working on Me all day.  Sister walked around clapping and swaying.  How cute.
