The Road Show by Braden Bell

Those who know me well know that I am an avid reader.  I love to read, and have always loved to read.  Over the last two and a half years, what with raising two little ones, I have not read nearly as much as I would have liked.

I recently started reading for pleasure more.  As a self professed bibliophile, I started perusing the virtual stacks at Goodreads.com and looking at the titles I had on my shelves.  It had been awhile since I had visited Goodreads, and I realized that I missed it.  I missed seeing what new titles were coming out.  I missed learning what my friends and colleagues were reading.  I missed entering the giveaways.

So, I decided to make it a point to regularly visit Goodreads to keep up with what is new in the wonderful world of books.

On a recent visit, I entered a giveaway for The Road Show by Braden Bell, and was pleasantly surprised when I actually won.

PictureBook Description

Scott Jenson hates everything he knows about road shows: cheap costumes, silly songs, and bad acting. Being asked to create a road show is his worst nightmare come true. Can flawed but talented artist create a piece of art that testifies of Jesus Christ? And is there any way that something so trivial can have a healing effect on the lives of five troubled souls? A pornography addict, a depressed young mother, a sick older woman, a lonely outcast, and a spiritually numb elder s quorum president are about to find out. Braden Bell gives a five-star performance with Road Show: Beauty for Ashes. With true-to-life characters, humorous situations, and tender realizations, this book is guaranteed to make you smile and applaud for more.

  • Paperback: 128 pages
  • Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc. (June 8, 2010)

What I thought…

The book arrived pretty quickly, and honestly, I read it in one sitting.

The Road Show by Braden Bell, published in June 2010 by Cedar Fort, is an inspiring story about five people who face familiar challenges yet find hope and healing through Christ.

The book is written from an LDS perspective, and includes several quotes from the Book of Mormon.  The characters in the story are Mormon, which lends to the use of Mormon idioms.  However, although the book is about Mormons, it not strictly for Mormons.  It is easy enough to understand the vernacular and follow the story without being confused.  While I wouldn’t suggest the book as Christian doctrine, I do think it is a well written work of fiction that is worthy of a pleasure read.

The Road Show deals with the struggles that many people, including Christians, face today: pornography addiction; postpartum depression; health issues; loneliness; feelings of isolation; feeling ostracized; spiritual numbness.  Because the characters, and their struggles, are universal, they become real and relatable.   Each of the characters could easily be your brother, your mother, your neighbor, or even you.

At just 128 pages, the book quickly grabs your attention and keeps it.  It is a quick, easy, and heart warming read.  Ultimately, the book offers tangible hope that our struggles can be overcome and that healing is available to those who ask.

What I would change…

I wouldn’t change anything about the book.

Random Recipe- Easy Taco Salad

When I was a kid, my Mom used to make the BEST taco salad.  While I don’t remember exactly how she used to make it, I thought I would try my hand at making an easy taco salad.

IMG_0889

What I used

  • 1 pound ground meat (I used venison, but ground beef or ground turkey would work just as well)
  • 1 bag nacho cheese chips (I used Aldi brand)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar
  • 1 bag spring mixed greens (I used Aldi brand)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix
  • Light Sour Cream (I used Aldi brand)

First, I browned the ground meat and prepared it according to the taco seasoning mix instructions.  Because I am not a fan of spicy foods, I only used half of the seasoning packet.  While the meat was simmering, I crushed up half the bag of nacho cheese chips and set the other half bag to the side for later use.  Then I cut up half the bag of Spring Green Mix into bite size pieces.  I layered the nacho cheese chips and spring green mix in the bowl, first the chips, then the greens and repeated.  By that point, the ground meat was done.  I dumped the seasoned ground meat into the bowl, added two cups shredded cheddar cheese, and tossed.  I served it with light sour cream on the side.

My husband LOVED it.  Of course, all the kids wanted to eat was the sour cream, so they had blueberries and bananas for dinner.

Next time, I will use the whole packet of seasoning mix, as I don’t think it would be too overpowering mixed in with all of the other ingredients.

Other things you could add in include tomatoes, olives, and black beans.

What’s your favorite taco salad recipe?

Be blessed,

Virginia

Amy Grant- Somewhere Down the Road Review plus Giveaway

I have long been a fan of Amy Grant.  Her music has always hit a chord in me, and somehow resonated deep within.  Her music has such an honest tenor to it.  Amy Grant has won six Grammy’s, numerous Dove Awards, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has received many other noteworthy accolades.  She truly is an American music icon.  And yet, somehow, she remains so grounded and appealing.  Maybe it’s her down to earth attitude, or the fact that she has faced so many trials, but for some reason, I’ve always felt like she is so relatable.

My all time favorite song by Amy is El Shaddai.  The song had long been a favorite of mine, so when she lent her amazing vocals to it, it just made my heart smile.

Thanks to the marketing team for Somewhere Down the Road, I had the opportunity to review this newest album from Amy.

  • What I thought…

True to her amazing musical talent, Amy Grant proved she’s still got the chops with Better Than a Hallelujah, the first single from her new album, Somewhere Down the Road. The title track, Somewhere Down the Road, really strikes a chord with anyone who has ever searched for life’s answers.  Third World Woman is a poignant portrait of one waiting on the Lord’s mercy and us learning to try to walk in someone else’s shoes.  Come Into My World is a challenging ballad about learning to really listen to people, see them for who they are, rather than judging and trying to fix them.  Hard Times serves as a reminder to me of where I have been, and some of the hard times I have faced, while pointing to the hope I have found.

My favorite song on the album is Better Than A Hallelujah.  The chorus, “We pour out our miseries, God just hears a melody—Beautiful the mess we are, the honest cries, of breaking hearts—Are better than a Hallelujah” serves as a beautiful reminder that the Lord hears our heart.

Amy also just announced her 12 Days of Christmas Tour, the fifth Christmas tour in which she will share the stage with hubby Vince Gill.

While her Christmas tour will not be coming to St. Louis, her Pieces of Our Lives Tour will be in St. Louis on October 26, 2010!

    What I would change…

I wouldn’t change anything about the album.  I could relate to each of the songs and absolutely loved the album.
