Grace is Enough

This evening, as we were going through our nightly routine of getting the kids to bed, I noted that the thermostat said it was 75 degrees in the house.

For most people, this would not be a problem, and may even be normal.

We are not most people.

Because Mister and I are both affected by Hay Wells Syndrome, one of several ectodermal dysplasia (ED) syndromes that affect ectoderm as well as structures that do not derive from the ectoderm, we do not sweat properly.  I sweat only in extreme circumstances, and then only in one place.

Mister does not sweat at all. In fact, he usually starts overheating if the ambient temperature goes above 73 degrees.  No wonder he was cranky.

When Mister was just a few months old, we literally had to pack ice packs into the lining of his car seat just to go to church.  We keep a “cooling bag” with us at all times.  In it is a specialized cooling blanket (when wet works off of the evaporative properties), a cooling vest, a battery operated fan, a spray bottle, two bottles of water, a zipper bag with wash clothes, and a forehead scanning digital thermometer.

My husband went to the basement to check on the central air unit.  Apparently, the compressor went on the fritz.  So, we opened all the windows, turned on the fans, etc.

We finally got Mister settled down to sleep, after checking his temperature, which was at 98.  As long as we could get him to go to bed without too much of a fuss, we may be able to keep his temperature down until we can get someone out here to fix the central air.

Of course, I can’t get comfortable (and therefore cannot sleep) when it is too warm, so I stayed up when everyone else retired for the evening.

As I sat here, stressing over the central air unit, wondering whether or not Mister would remain cool enough during the night, the lyrics to the song Your Grace is Enough (Chris Tomlin) just kept going through my head.

This morning at church, our worship pastor, Demond Robinson, talked about how God’s grace truly is enough.  Not just when things are going as planned, but when life throws you a curve ball, too.  Then the worship team led us in the song.

And now, it keeps rolling through my head.  You know what that tells me? That the Lord Himself will protect us.  That isn’t to say that our central air will be back on immediately, or that it won’t cost us a ton of money that we weren’t expecting to spend right now.  But, the Lord will make a way for us to keep cool if need be.  Whether He sends a cool front, or we mooch cool air while sitting on a friends couch…

His grace is enough.

Thanks, Demond, for the reminder. Who knew I would need it tonight!

And now, since I can’t sleep, I am going to try to write some reviews that are due.

Be blessed,

Virginia

P.S.  In case you’re not familiar with the song, here are the lyrics…

Great is Your faithfulness oh God
You wrestle with the sinner’s heart
You lead us by still waters and to mercy
And nothing can keep us apart
So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise
Oh God
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
Great is Your love and justice God
You use the weak to lead the strong
You lead us in the song of Your salvation
And all Your people sing along
So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise
Oh God
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me (x2)
So remember Your people
Remember Your children
Remember Your promise
Oh God
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
Your grace is enough
Heaven reaching down to us
Your grace is enough for me
God i see your grace is enough
I’m covered in your love
Your grace is enough for me
For me

Kraft’s Response to the Moldy Capri Sun Pouch

As you may be aware, consumer Melissa Wiegand Brown recently found this nastiness in a leaky pouch of Capri Sun that she had purchased.

You can view more photos in her album here.

She wrote this on her FB photos wall: “when we opened a new box of the drinks my husband pulled the top pouch out, it was sticky and immediately started leaking everywhere… he went to drain it in the sink and felt something LARGE inside the pouch… that’s when he got out a kitchen knife and sliced it open as he was yelling for me to get the camera and document it!”

The photos have sparked a HUGE consumer response, to say the least.

After cutting a slice to have it tested independently, Melissa gave the rest to Kraft for testing.

Kraft’s initial testing reported the matter to be mold.  They are also having a second independent lab test it.

Kraft released this set of Capri Sun FAQs on their site:

CAPRI SUN FAQs

We appreciate that our Facebook community is so engaged and willing to share their point of view. Whenever you have questions about one of our products, it’s important that you’re in the know about what we know. It’s also important that you have the most accurate and up-to-date information from us. You can find answers below to some of your most pressing questions. Let’s keep the lines of communication open.
– Vinay Sharma, Director, Capri Sun Beverages

Why have you been so slow to respond?
We take every consumer contact seriously and responded immediately to the consumer. As soon as we received their sample, our quality experts began their initial testing. They confirmed that it is mold we quickly shared those results with the consumer and our Facebook community. However, out of an abundance of caution, we asked a leading, accredited food testing lab for a second opinion. Silliker, Inc. confirmed it is mold.

Are you taking a chance in waiting so long and not issuing a recall?
No. An issue with a single pouch does not indicate a broader problem, particularly because we were told from the start it was a leaking package and this product is preservative free. When a leak occurs, a preservative free beverage can spoil and mold can grow. We believe that is what happened here. Because this can happen, we include a message on the carton that consumers should discard any leaking or damaged packages.

How does Kraft Foods know the mold is not harmful?
While unpleasant, it is more of a quality rather than a safety issue. However, we take consumer concerns very seriously so we sent the sample to a leading, accredited lab for testing. They independently confirmed it is mold. Because this product contains no preservatives, when a leak occurs, the beverage can spoil and mold can grow. That’s why discarding leaking or damaged packages is the right step. In fact, we include a message on the carton encouraging people to do this.

So, this is a common occurrence?
No, but it does happen from time to time because the product is preservative free. And that’s exactly why we include a message on the carton that consumers should discard any leaking or damaged packages.

Does the mold form more often in warm weather?
The weather or humidity has little or no effect on whether mold forms in this product. Given that there are no preservatives in the product, even from a microscopic hole can introduce air and mold can begin to form.

What can you do to prevent this?
Adding preservatives would be one option but we know that consumers appreciate that Capri Sun is preservative free. Through the years, we have made adjustments to minimize leaks. However, there’s just no way to guarantee a pouch is never cut or punctured. That’s why there’s a statement on the carton, recommending consumers discard any leaky pouches.

Was cost the only consideration in not issuing a recall?
Not at all. The safety of our products and the well-being of our consumers are our highest priorities. Based on some previous incidents, we were reasonably certain the problem was mold. This was confirmed by an independent lab. It’s more of a quality issue related to leaking packages than a food safety issue.

Is Capri Sun made in China?
No. Every Capri Sun that is sold in the United States is produced in the United States. U.S. labeling laws require that we reference the country of origin (in this case China) on the package when apple juice concentrate is sourced from there. We source as much of this ingredient as we can from the United States, but there’s not enough available here to meet our needs. Please be assured that regardless of origin, all ingredients we use in Kraft Foods products comply with our rigorous food safety standards, which meet, and in many cases exceed, the government’s requirements.

Who are Claire and Anne-Marie? Are they real Kraft Foods corporate employees?
Yes, Anne-Marie and Claire are Kraft Foods employees and moderate this Facebook page. They’re here to answer your questions. http://www.facebook.com/KraftFoods?v=app_17037175766

Does Kraft Foods understand why I am worried?
Absolutely. We regret this situation and understand that it is unpleasant. Many of us are parents, too, so we care about what our kids and your kids drink. The safety of our food and the well being of our consumers are critically important to us. And we’re doing everything we can to address the situation as quickly as possible.

Some consumers are outraged because Kraft did not issue a widespread recall of the Capri Sun product.

The FDA apparently did not think it was a big enough emergency to alert the public and do a recall when they were notified of it.  The FDA has their Alert to Recall process listed on their site at:

FDA 101: Product Recalls – From First Alert to Effectiveness Checks

Kraft has been updating the issue on the Kraft Facebook Page.

My kids occasionally drink Capri Sun, but I have always actually cut the pouches and drained them into their spill proof cups.  So, I wouldn’t have a problem with continuing our regular practice with Capri Sun.

What do you think?  Will your kids be drinking Capri Sun?

Virginia

Comcast: Helping you entertain, save, and be safe

On Thursday, June 10, I had the opportunity to participate in a live webcast conversation about family entertainment during the summer, protecting your family online, saving money and a new interactive app, from Comcast, to manage your entertainment experience.  The webcast was put on by Comcast and hosted by Kelly Vrooman, from The Sunny Side Up Show.  Mister loves Kelly and Chica, so I was excited to see what would be discussed.

The cool part was that we had the opportunity to tweet questions and some of those questions were answered during the webcast.

You can view the webcast here:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

I was excited to hear about Comcast’s Cyber Summer Safety Challenge.  The Cyber Summer Safety Challenge for Kids & Teens includes links to download both forms. And be sure to check out http://security.comcast.net/ for lots of great information.

Click here to download the Summer Fun On Demand calendar. And visit this website to find out more about Parental Controls.

Comcast is looking to host more of these webcast conversations and they want to know what entertainment and technology topics interest my readers (yep—that’s you).  So, if you have any questions about Comcast, entertainment, or technology, please leave me a comment and I will compile a list to send over.

Fantastic Father’s Day Finds: muvee Reveal

Lady V dZineimageAnyone that knows me knows that I am not tech savvy.  That would be why I married an engineer.  He is my tech savvy. There are times, though, that I want to be able to do something tech savvy without my hubby’s help.  So, when I had the opportunity to review the new MuVee Reveal for my Fantastic Father’s Day Finds guide, I jumped on it happily accepted it.

Home movies don’t make themselves. Until now.  muvee Reveal lets you create and share personalized, professional looking home movies in a few quick steps. With automatic motion and face detection, your photos and video are synced to the beat of your favorite music.  Tell your story the way you want to through advanced personalization features including captions, voiceover and music trimming. Post to YouTube, Facebook or burn to DVD – the sharing possibilities are endless. Home movie making has never been so easy.

I know that many are not so luck to have an tech geek for a husband, and would love to be able to make home movies themselves.

About the product…

muvee Reveal makes everything easy. Automatic brightness control, color correction and red eye reduction. Zoom in on specific details, rotate images and change the sequence of images. You have complete control.  Add styles, titles, music, etc.

Many video software programs are complicated and take a long time to learn, muvee Reveal is different. In most video software you have to go through a steep learning curve to learn the software and then spend a great deal of time working on timelines, tweaking effects and using sync markers just to make a short home video. muvee Reveal eliminates all the complexity and lets you concentrate on telling your story.

Constructed after years of working with and consulting professional video editors using manual video software tools.
Video software should let you do what you want to do – make a home video, make it look good and share it with friends and family. muvee Reveal is so simple it does not even come with an instruction manual.

Download, install, add media, add music, play, and upload, embed, burn or what ever takes your fancy. It’s video software for anyone looking to create professional looking home movies without the fuss.

This video demonstrates how easy it is…

What I thought…

I thought that muvee Reveal was incredibly easy to use.  You can add photos through the add file button in the menu, or you can drag and drop.  It is easy to reorder photos and change styles.

I chose to do a video of some of my wedding photos.  The only problem I ran into is that I have too many photos to choose from (over 700 in digital format, and that is not including the ones that were taken with point and shoot cameras).

The program even let me know when I had added too many photos for the song I chose!  Now, that is what I call dummy proof.

Here’s my video.

I liked the fact that I could customize the title and credits.  You can even combine muvees, although I haven’t ventured that far into my tech freedom.

What I would change…

I don’t think I would change anything about the program itself.  The themes available are nice, but it would be great to have even more.

How I rate it…

Lady V dZine rates My Privates are Private a 5 out of 5 hearts

Lady V dZine gives muvee Reveal a rousing five out of five hearts.
