8 Legal Issues for Bloggers: Part 2 | FreelanceSwitch

My favorite thing that Jason Adams wrote is, “A blogger who is aware of his rights and the limits of his trade will be more able to navigate tricky situations as they arise.”

In other words, it pays to be informed!

Helmets Required in St. Louis County, MO

Do your kids wear helmets?

stlcosign

I recently learned  two very important things about helmets…

  1. The St. Louis County Health Program offers free bike helmets for children.
  2. The St. Louis County Helmet Ordinance requires that all children ages 1 to 17 years wear a secured helmet for ALL wheeled sports.  This includes bicycles, skates, scooters, tricycles, etc.

After getting Mister a tricycle and ordering a bike trailer, I knew a trip to county health was in order.  Because of our location, we chose to go to Saint Louis County Department of Health – North Central Community Health Center, but you can check for your nearest location by visiting the St. Louis County DOH Free Safety Helmet Locations listings.

I actually did call ahead to ask if an appointment was necessary.  I was instructed that I could come in any time.  So, I put the kids in the car and headed over.  When I arrived, the front desk called the RN from Special Programs- Maternal and Child Health.  Bridget, who would normally do the fitting, apologized profusely that she was swamped and needed in a meeting.  She asked if I could wait a just a few minutes while checked to see if another nurse, from the Pediatrics department, would be able to fit the kids.  After placing a call, she came back over and said that Vera would be out to help us in a few minutes.  She also gave me her card and asked me to call her if I had any questions and said that if I was unable to wait for any reason, just to call her for an appointment.  Bridget was very sweet and apologetic, and I appreciated that she took the time to find someone else to fit the kids for helmets when she was unable to do it.

Within a few minutes, Miss Vera arrived from Pediatrics.  She was extremely cordial.  We followed her back to an exam room, where she had me complete the forms (one for each child) that the county requires for distribution of the helmets.  Then she measured Mister, fitted a helmet for him, and instructed me on proper usage.  Next, she measure Sister, fitted a helmet for her, and again reiterated the instructions for proper usage.  She gave me a brochure with each helmet, as well as an extra set of velcro straps that could be used if we needed a snugger fit.  She also showed me how to use the dial on the back of the helmet to adjust the cap size.  After asking me if I had any questions, she bid me a good day.  When we thanked her, she stated, “My pleasure.  I enjoy helping others enjoy the outdoor sports safely.”  Miss Vera was gentle with the kids, informative, and courteous—despite the fact I know we were an unscheduled interruption in her routine.

Here are the kids in their new helmets…

There are also Free Safety Events, where you can take your child to be fitted.

The next one is…

Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

St. Anthony’s Medical Center – Anthony House

10016 Kennerly Rd., St Louis, MO, 63128

Some municipalities are also offering free helmets to residents.  Call your city hall to check.

As a former healthcare worker, I am all too aware of how quickly criticisms of health care workers, and/or facilities or programs, will spring forth, but compliments are rarely spoken.  That is one of the reasons I chose to write about our experience with the Free Safety Helmet Program.  Bridget and Miss Vera deserve to be recognized for both their professionalism and their customer service.  A hearty “Thanks!” to Bridget and Miss Vera for being so kind, and to St. Louis County DOH for the helmets.  Our kids look forward to a safe summer of riding now!

McDonald's Recalls Shrek Forever After Glassware

I just received this in my inbox from PR Newswire for Journalists :: All Releases.

McDonalds USA Voluntarily recalls Shrek Forever After (TM) Glassware.

Instructions for Returning Glassware Will be Posted on Company’s Web Site

OAK BROOK, Ill., June 4 /PRNewswire/ — In collaboration with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and as a precautionary measure, McDonald’s USA today issued a voluntary recall of its four Shrek Forever After(TM) glassware recently offered in its U.S. restaurants. Customers should stop using the glasses and visit www.mcdonalds.com/glasses beginning June 8 for instructions on how to return them and get a refund.

McDonald’s safety standards are among the highest in the industry and the company has a strong track record. To be clear, the glassware was evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory which is accredited by the CPSC, and determined to be in compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements at the time of manufacture and distribution. However, in light of the CPSC’s evolving assessment of standards for cadmium in consumer products, McDonald’s determined in an abundance of caution that a voluntary recall of the Shrek Forever After glasses is appropriate.

"When the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission approached McDonald’s about cadmium in their current movie-themed drinking glasses, the company responded quickly, agreed to cooperate fully and acted on the side of caution," said Scott Wolfson, Director of the Office of Information and Public Affairs, CPSC. "The glasses have far less cadmium than the children’s metal jewelry that CPSC has previously recalled."

McDonald’s has a longstanding, cooperative relationship with the CPSC, and continues to follow their lead as testing protocols and new scientific information becomes available.

The Shrek Forever After glassware was offered in four glass designs at McDonald’s restaurants beginning May 21. The four designs include Puss n’ Boots, Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey. Customers can get instructions to return the glassware and request a refund by visiting www.mcdonalds.com/glasses beginning June 8. Customers can also call McDonald’s toll-free number at 1-800-244-6227. Previous McDonald’s promotional glassware is not involved in the recall.

Fantastic Father’s Day Finds- Treat him to dinner at Chili’s

Lady V dZine

Have you been to Chili’s lately?

IMG_5134

I was so excited when I received the opportunity to review Chili’s new freshly prepared menu items for Lady V dZine.  My family and I enjoy going to Chili’s because of the great food and the friendly staff there.  Another important reason we enjoy Chili’s is because you can access the Chili’s Allergy Information online.  With a food allergic child in the house, we love it when we can find out about the potential allergen exposure BEFORE we visit a restaurant.

IMG_5136 <—Here’s the fam.

We ordered the freshly prepared chicken nachos as an appetizer.

IMG_5140

The new menus choices made it difficult for me to choose.  Not Brian, though.  He is a huge Country Fried Steak fan, so he ordered this.

I was in the mood for something different, so I thought I would try one of the Big Mouth Burgers.

IMG_5135Chili’s has four new Big Mouth Burgers.

ULTIMATE STACKED BURGER™–Two Big Mouth Burger patties stacked a mile-high with melted American cheese, mayo, applewood smoked bacon, pickles, lettuce, tomato and crispy onion strings.

AVOCADO BURGER–A warm wheat bun bursting at the seams with fresh avocado, tomato, red onion, pickles, lettuce and Swiss cheese topped with avocado-ranch.

ROJO BURGER–A classic that’s back. Mouth-watering burger with cheddar cheese and topped with a rich, smoky hickory sauce.

SHINER BOCK® BBQ BURGER–Our newest burger to crave, topped with sweet’n tangy Shiner Bock® BBQ sauce, cheddar and crispy onion strings.

I decided to get the Shiner Bock Burger, because I love onion strings.

And we ordered the Pepper Pals Cheese Quesadilla for the kids to split.

The food was absolutely delicious.

We don’t normally order dessert when we go out to eat, but we decided to make an exception.  Brian ordered the Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie and I ordered the White Chocolate Molten Cake.  We were so overwhelmed by the PORTION SIZE (they were HUGE) of our dessert that we forgot to take pictures, so I will tempt you with these…

Needless to say, we left Chili’s STUFFED.  Our dinner could not have been better!

I ***big puffy heart*** Chili’s.
