I’ve never been one to take a lot of vitamins and supplements. Not because I don’t think they are beneficial, but because I am forgetful. I will buy a bottle of calcium supplements, and take them faithfully for about six days. The next time I remember to take them, they are expired. For real!
Since I am still on my fitness journey, I have found that some supplements are absolutely necessary. Protein, for example. Some days I struggle to meet my protein goal while staying within my calorie budget. And B-12. Let’s face it, I need energy. So, I’ve started testing out some supplements.
The trouble is, supplements are NOT cheap. I don’t want to buy a supplement only to discover that it doesn’t work, has unwelcome side effects, or that I don’t like it. I am not a fan of throwing my money down the drain (or flushing it down the commode). For review, I received the Liquid Vitamin B12 Complex, the Chromium Picolinate and Chromium Picolinate plus Green Tea, and the Pure Whey Protein Powder in Triple Chocolate and French Vanilla.
The Liquid Vitamin B12 Complex is supposed to give you natural energy without the unpleasant side effects from stimulants or caffeine. I am finding that the more weight I lose, and the more water I drink, the less satisfying my coffee is. PERISH THE NOTION! I love the taste of my coffee, don’t get me wrong, and am certain I will always enjoy a cup of joe daily. It just isn’t giving me the same kick in the pants that it used to. So, if caffeine isn’t going to kick me in the pants, I need something that will. And it better be something that won’t cause me to crash and burn afterwards. I did feel like I had more energy after using the Liquid Vitamin B12 Complex, and it wasn’t as nasty tasting as I expected it to be. It was actually okay. Not my favorite beverage, by any stretch of the imagination, but okay. I also didn’t have the after-energy-drink-let-down that I have gotten in the past from other energy shots. It didn’t give me as much energy as I had hoped, though.
I read an article about Dr. Oz touting the benefits of Chromium Picolinate and how it is supposed to reduce sugar cravings when taken routinely. I was excited to take it just based on what he said. I struggle with being a carb junkie. And when I say carb, I mean sugar. If I don’t touch the stuff, I do well. However, if I eat one jelly bean you can bet I will eat thirty. Of course, that does not bode well for one trying to shed the last twenty some odd pounds! So, I started taking the Chromium Picolinate as instructed, once a day. As long as I take it, I do well avoiding all the sweet junk. Whether that is a response to the supplement, or a psychosomatic side effect, I cannot be sure. Whatever, I don’t care if it’s a placebo if it helps keep me from licking the cheesecake platter clean or eating a second slice of key lime pie! Now, if I can just remember to take it every day!!
Of the three products I received, my favorite is the Pure Whey Protein Powder. I feel better when I make my protein goal daily, and the protein powder helps me do that while staying in calorie budget. The first protein shake I made with it, I used skim milk. It was delish. I have also made protein shakes with it using plain water or aloe juice. Both are yummy. My favorite way to use it, though, is in a Greek yogurt smoothie. One scoop of the protein powder, half a cup of Greek yogurt, aloe juice, and enough ice to make it smooth. Oh my yum. By adding the Greek yogurt, there is even more protein punch to it, and I make protein goal every time I have one! Oh, and I love to just mix a tablespoon of it into plain Greek yogurt, too, to make it CHOCOLATE Greek yogurt. Now, that is serious YUM factor.
